Start by understanding the client's goals and target audience to align your style with their needs. For example, subtly incorporate your bold lighting in product photography to meet their objectives. Maintain your unique style but adapt to trends like minimalist photography, adding your personal touch through composition or color.

You're passionate about photography, and blending your style with commercial demands doesn’t have to mean compromising your vision. Consider offering two distinct services: one commercial, and the other focusing on your artistic side. Alternatively, look for clients who appreciate both aspects. Many top photographers have successfully balanced this, such as Annie Leibovitz, who is known for her artistic portraits of celebrities while also working with major brands like Louis Vuitton. Richard Avedon mastered both fashion photography and deeply personal projects like In the American West. Irving Penn also combined commercial work with his iconic still lifes and portraits. You don't need to define a rigid line—let your style evolve with both.

I often face the challenge of striking a balance between my unique style and the evolving demands of the commercial world. To address this, I continuously work on developing strategies to adapt effectively. This includes staying informed about current trends, integrating popular elements into my work, communicating with clients to understand their preferences, and actively learning from workshops, industry influencers, and professional forums. By maintaining this balance between artistic vision and commercial requirements, I'm able to thrive in the fast-paced and competitive landscape of commercial photography.

As a photojournalist I had to learn to how to blend my style of photography with commercial demands. I experimented with different types of photography that told stories. I even got a position as a press photographer to gain a better understanding of public visual perception. This also included me getting a position as a camerawoman at my local PBS TV-12 where I learned techniques that allowed me to create visual story narratives. I combined all of what I learned with client feedback to strengthen my effectiveness of Storyline photography. I found having an adaptable and unique perspective keeps me in demand.

Start by thoroughly understanding the client’s objectives and the target audience. This will help you find common ground where your style can align with their commercial needs. For instance, if you have a preference for dramatic lighting, you can incorporate it subtly in product or branding photography to enhance the subject while meeting the client’s needs. Keep your core style intact but be flexible enough to adjust based on what’s trending. For example, if minimalist or lifestyle photography is trending, adapt your style by focusing on those elements while still applying your unique touch in the composition, color grading, or framing.
