When I was majoring in IT in college, no one bothered to mention any roles besides developer. Through a lot of serendipity, I found that the way I could increase my personal philanthropic impact was to work in technology that helped nonprofits increase their impact. Every day I wake up inspired to help another organization fulfill their mission.

There are so many paths to explore here. Private Foundations, Living Donors, Corporate Social Impact, Consulting, the key is to gain valuable and relevant experience early in your career. What are you doing to position yourself and gain this experience? Who is in your network that can support you?

A lot of companies are looking for people to hire that have a knowledge of how to talk social impact in their company. If you don't want to be in the non-profit sector but still want to make impact, you can start working with companies that have impact lead founders and help them make impact through their products!

Opportunities to work in philanthropy is found in multi sectors and multi disciplines. Wealth and financial advisors support their clients with expert advise on how to achieve their philanthropic aspirations. Also estate planning attorneys do the same. Even life insurance professionals can assist individuals with policies which help them care for the causes on their hearts in addition to themselves and their families. Nonprofits need skills and talents in communications (including digital), data management, accounting, administration, investments and more. There are ample opportunities to begin and grow a philanthropic career.

In philanthropy, things may be even better as the sector has become more diversified over the years and nowadays offers more entry points. To kick things off, explore organizations you're interested in, identify key players, network with like-minded individuals, attend events, review job postings and aim to bridge any profile gaps to make yourself an eligible candidate. If your career is just beginning, consider entry-level roles or internships. For seasoned professionals, focus on leveraging your skills effectively to fit the role. And remember, patience is a virtue & the right opportunity is worth preparing for!
