You're passionate about equity in transportation. How can you amplify marginalized voices in decision-making?

As lower income workers often string together, two or three part-time jobs to make ends meet, they seldom have time for community meetings. However, they often know and talk with a neighborhood leader who has their back. While a transportation planner won’t know who those leaders are, the local librarian or public health outreach worker would know. ask for the help of these who already work in these communities.

Explain to policy makers that a project designed to benefit the maximum number of people, requires eliciting perspectives of all demographic groups that could be affected by the project, as well as organizations that work with these families & individuals. You don’t know what you don’t know unless you ask those who likely already know! That entails working with organizations that represent people who don’t look like you, don’t share your lifestyle, don’t have your abilities, and seldom speak your language. This goes beyond outreach, including pop-up events, surveys, and community meetings. Those who oversee the project need to include people who already consider the perspectives of marginalized communities in their outside activities.

A measure of success in community outrage is comparing the demographics of the population who might use a particular transportation facility or other project with the demographics of the people who expressed their opinion or attended community meetings in whatever way. As people don’t want to be categorized and are afraid of being tokenized, counting participants who fall into various minority demographic categories often has to be done subjectively.
