I think that one thing that is missing from this conversation is time. Many events happen when people are at work, getting off of work or during the weekday. Many underrepresented communities do not have the luxury of taking off of work to attend an afternoon event. Having events on the weekend and that are non-traditional hours can also attract these communities.

Many times, events are organised in places that some sections of the community like the physically challenged cannot access. Take an example of a person in a wheel chair expected to attend an event on the 2nd floor of a building, however this building has no lift or ramp for easy access. This person will be left behind. Venues should easily be accessible by all, also in terms of physical location. Can those with no vehicles reach the venue?

One point of this that a person is a person whether that one has a slow mental learning ability or some other handicap. Just because they do, it don't mean they are disqualified them from ideas spoken out or board meetings etc,. They just mighty show more signs of encouragement in different areas which would have have a greater impact on things. So do no under estimate the handicapped or disabled they have a lot to offer more than they a person gives credit.

Many folks from an underrepresented group WILL NOT raise their hand because of the natural feeling of not being represented. In a nutrition organization I run (Our Diet Line) one of the strategies I put in place to ensure that all geopolitical zones and universities studying nutrition and dietetics in Nigeria are involved in our program is by setting up Campus Initiative through which we recruit campus directors from all schools.
