2 Define your vision and goals

After you have a clear picture of the current state, you should define your vision and goals as a Systems Design leader. Your vision should describe the desired future state of the systems you’re designing, and how they align with the organization’s mission and strategy. Your goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives that support your vision. You should also prioritize your goals based on their impact, urgency, and feasibility.

I agree but jumping into system design without understanding problem domain and establishing target state of business architecture would lead to multiple iteration of system design because nobody would be able to answer a simple question - would designed system be aligned with high level functional requirements.

In my view as a system design lead your main responsibilities are driving change and innovation forward and challenging the status quo. However I like to be cautious to not fall victim to chasing after every trend. In my personal opinion for many projects and systems microservice architecture is a brilliant example for this. I have seen some projects that really just added complexity by steering towards microservice. Of course there are benefits, however I think they are only really worth the overhead in really specific (and large) software projects.

Instead of trying to do 5 things as the first thing you do, step back and reflect of what the important aspect in your new role is: Is it ?system design“ or is it ?leader“? Chances are the important thing here is ?leader“. And so, if there are any people really to ?lead“ and it is not just a decoy of ?lone range“, then by all means focus on leadership. Very naturally, this does include all the five dimensions from above, but is not really specific to system design. Embrace that you are here to lead, not to be the smartest guy in town.
