You're a new manager. How can you create a positive work environment?

Active listening: Engage with team members by maintaining eye contact, nodding, and asking clarifying questions. Reflective responses: Repeat back what you heard to show understanding eg, when a team member expresses frustration with a difficult client, respond with "It seems like you're feeling overwhelmed by the client's demands." Non-judgmental attitude: Avoid criticizing or blaming team members for their feelings or actions. Instead, offer constructive feedback and solutions. Supportive gestures: Offer assistance and provide training opportunities to help team members succeed. Follow-up: Check in with team members regularly to show ongoing support and reinforce a positive work environment.

People want to be seen and heard. Ask questions. Get to know them. What's important to them. When we treat people as humans, it's transformative in a workplace.

I will say what I have done. I watched for talent among my team members--who goes the extra mile vs. who does the bare minimum. I listened to suggestions they had to improve the quality of services we offered, and gave them opportunities to implement those services. I inquired about their desires to move up into a leadership role, and allowed them the chance to become team leaders, supervisors, and program directors. I also assisted them with obtaining licenses and certifications. In my opinion, actions of trust in employees' abilities and demonstrating that trust by supporting their ingenuity, expanding their responsibilities, and increasing their salary speak volumes about a leader's commitment to creating a positive work environment.

Always place yourself in the shoes of your direct report and remember when you were fresh off, or had a new manager. Be open to hearing all concerns and making space for those to feel safe for freedom of expression, that’s how you’ll get the truth and will save time on troubleshooting. People care about those who care about them, show up human and your team will love you, for you!

Positive reinforcements are vital for continuing positive work environments. Nobody wants to keep busting it all the time and never get recognized or shown any appreciation; even if it's standard expectations. Show appreciation for meeting expectations and you will soon see that those goals will begin to be exceeded. Positive environments are so important.

Communication at all levels with empathy and care, be constructive but flexible, show agility together with partnership not with orders, ask with please and answer with thank you, drive with wisdom not power. Look, listen, read and learn. let the door open for all, accept advise and feedback. Guidance with what about, how we can and who is the best to do, avoid should, must and my way or the highway.

Continuous self-reflection is vital for communication as it promotes growth and development. Also having the courage to provide honest feedback, even on uncomfortable topics, fosters trust and transparency, strengthening relationships and enabling meaningful progress.

Letting people do and helping them to do better. But do not get in their and let them learn by themselves. Do not take their work and do not expect them to do like you do. Everybody has to find their own way of doing and that is what managers need to understand. It is clear that things have to be done, but the how can be always improved, or just done differently. And also a manager has to make sure also that some people are better doing certain things and this is where a manager has to play a key role instead of just making people do things, but making sure that people do what they are best at.

Continual, positive feedback is useful for building up your staff. You can incorporate this into meetings, passing comments, weekly emails, and written notes of encouragement. You can also brag on your staff, always pointing credit where it is due, when someone compliments your work. Moreover, try listening and being conscientious of their spoken and unspoken needs, and give actual rewards for work well done (not just a pizza party twice a year).
