You’re a new manager. How can you build trust with your team and earn their respect?

A manager should be attentive to the needs of the employees. A manager should trust the employees, give the employees the feeling that in any situation they can turn to the manager.

Be authentic as a new manager to build trust and respect. Embrace your true self, avoiding imitation or pretense. Share your personality, values, and strengths openly. Admit weaknesses and errors, seeking feedback and assistance when necessary. Authenticity demonstrates humanity, humility, and relatability, fostering trust and rapport with your team from the outset.

Communication involves listening, observing, empathizing and speaking. In initial period, one shall actively listen and learn about the existing work culture and team dynamics. Don't assume anything and be objective in assessing people. Communicate with clear expectation, set objective and deliverables. By demonstrating your presence by guiding them in challenges, you can build trust and fostering environment.

Schedule regular 1-on-1s with each team member to understand their work, provide context on goals, and give feedback. Don't just wait for formal reviews.
