My students start by researching the market. They interview professionals who are already in the field for years to determine which courses to take and skills to develop. I also coach my students to do a skill-gap analysis. They list down all their skills in one column. In the second column, they write all the skills the role requires. Then they find out from the table which skills they do not have.

Engaging within your industry network is a great starting place. Understanding your goals and the skills required to get there will help you understand your gaps. Your network can be a great resource to tried and true ways or sources for building skills as well as helping identify options within your price-point. Getting a mentor can help with accountability, providing clarification, and helping expand your current network through introductions.

When arriving in a new place, a good strategy is to observe. Observe how the people who work there perform their tasks, what problems they deal with, what tools they use and even more, if there is a way to improve the execution of tasks always get the chance to improving yourself in this process. After that, understand the environment and if there is a chance to contribute something new, take advantage. If there is a chance to develop a new skill for your professional growth with the benefit of the team, take advantage of it too.

Then FIND a person the mimics some of these goals today for you. See how they make be able to support you on your journey. I’ve found that mentors come and go as the years pass. This is because you’re evolving. Your needs change and your new growth requires new perspectives so that your blind spots are always in check. You’ll find the better you show up in the world while remaining curious, asking the right questions, but most importantly, listening to what and who is around you; these mentors will show up by themselves for you.
