The first tool should be a pad and paper. Sketch out what your learning will need: 1. Who are your learners? 2. When will they be learning? 3. What devices will they be learning with? 4. What is your client's desired outcome? 5. What tools do they currently use? 6. Where will the content be hosted? 7. How will you be measuring success? Then, and only then, should you be thinking about the tools and technology.

If you are a total noob to authoring tools, I would suggest Microsoft Powerpoint. iSpring is very similar to Powerpoint and pretty straightforward and can get you prepared to use Adobe and Articulate Storyline.

Articulate Rise and EasyGenerator are very similar and will get you up-to-speed very quickly. It you can create a good Powerpoint presentation, or Word/PDF document, you are halfway there. Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline are slightly more complicated, but the resulting content can be much more immersive and interactive.

There are some very good resources available from the software developers. YouTube and LinkedIn Learning offer some credible content to get you started, although it is rarely up-to-date or engaging.

The learning development cycle does not end with the delivery. You should be constantly measuring usage, listening to feedback, analysing completions, and feeding all of that information back into the content review cycles.
