This is an interesting discussion. Being transparent as a CIO can be tough; boards are not in our business nor do they deeply understand the bloodsport of creating alpha. If you ate an allocator and do not make decisive allocation shifts, no big deal as you just have to match policy. If you are pushing to beat your hurdles or benchmarks, you need to communicate your reasoning. This is why most do not push at any meaningful risk level above the policy benchmark. Why? If you are wrong over a 3 year period, you are in a bew job, selling cars. A governing entity that understands the long term vision to win is rare. It is the requirement for a winning program.

The best entrepreneurs are those that have the shortest time between _knowing_ something needs to be done and _doing_ on it. Things like firing people or sharing disappointing revenue growth with your board don't get easier by waiting. So practice your act fast muscle daily on anything you _know_ is important but not the most fun. And then when there are hard times, your investors will be fully engaged, cheering you on and, because you were early, be able to provide the best possible help navigating those challenges.

First and foremost is open and honest dialogue and getting ahead of any issues. Bring your investors into the conversation as they have value to add and can be constructive in building a path forward. Never ever try to bury issues as that is a recipe for disaster both for your business and your relationship with your investors.

Most certainly communication has to be timely, expedite, timely, well delineated and verifiable. Best plans or alternate routes are a must if your client are to succeed.

very simple: Marketing challenges and investor expectations are not riding the same boat. Investors are there based on certain commitments and forecasts which its the top management to achieve. For simplicity sake, I wld take the investors into confidence if they all are from the same share holder class, otherwise different presentations with each group. Overall investors expect to see that the company has obviously prepared itself or has plan B or even C. They wld not at 1st instance expect a sob story of a milkmaid's daughter..
