Communication, can never not be enough. And make sure some is over the phone not via text or email, sum up any telephone conversation "as per our telephone conversation" but always communicate. Honesty, the vendor will go the extra mile at there effort, time and expense but make sure the extra mile is what is needed. Crying wolf too many times will cause a trust issue and the vendor will 'check out' as the feeling will be lip service. Be mutually interactive - the vendor has a trust rely on it, they aren't going to sell your secrets, but help them help you with needs and deadlines, they bring a world of knowledge and can be that extra teammate to help score the run.

Always 'jot down' the points, but go back after and make formal notes. Too much information isn't complained as much as not enough. Having a good system that shows the records and has the details saves everyone from guessing or 'I think' down the road. Both parties keep the records, both parties are therefore accountable and both are just as engaged I. Having a successful business arrangement.

Be firm, the ground rules for both parties need to be there on day 1. Both are businesses so you are a number just as they are a number, having expectations laid out protects each side and ensures a proper business relationship. Problems and issues will arise, you can do one of 2 things - yell, rant, rave - which won't solve the issue and chances are the vendor is just as upset regarding the fallout of the situation as you are, or work with the vendor, offer help in trying to make things right. It gives again trust and assurance that your business dealings are not 'one time only' but a shared journey
