It's always a good idea to have connections with a variety of people because you never know when their background, experience, and skills can come into play. You also don't know who they know, so if you dismiss people who are not exactly like you in terms of industry, educational, or social circles, you might miss out on a connection in their network that could serve you. Also, broadening your networking horizon gives you perspective to both appreciate and potentially tune your current situation, but also help be more focused and targeted in the goals you have when networking.

Practice active listening by paying close attention to what the other person is saying, responding thoughtfully, and asking follow-up questions. This demonstrates respect and a sincere desire to understand their perspective.

One of the biggest challenges I see in networking is that people feel afraid or intimidated, depending on who they are speaking with, to talk about themselves as part of establishing who they are and what they are interested (goals). Connection is built through story and there is a way to do it (think elevator pitch) that give people a baseline and a level of engagement. Often people will find aspects of the personal story that resonate and leads to a better connection overall.

Sharing stories about how you have handled common challenges we all face in the workplace such as starting in a new role, conflict management, or giving feedback are some easy topics to find common ground when meeting with people from diverse backgrounds. Be sure and ask the person or group how they have handled similar situations.

The rule of thumb is people generally like to talk about themselves, but more important, be drawn into connection. Some people resist this because they are too busy thinking about their goals and outcomes. When you stop doing this, and engage first, make a person feel valued and you take an interest, it will lead to the right direction for your ultimate result. Taking the step back and giving others a space to share, allows for a better energy to flow in engagement and mutually beneficial outcomes.

Always start with what you can give away before you ask for something. This can be advice, materials, or whatever you have to share. Be humble, don't brag, and be the person that people view as generous, caring, and thoughtful. Don't fear being taken advantage of. Sure this can happen from time to time, but in the vast sea of networking, you will come across this less often when you give something of value to someone than not.

I encourage individuals to seek out and weave things you share in common with whomever you are networking with to further conversations together. As an example; you are a marketing analyst in the healthcare industry who is talking with an accountant in the financial services industry. First off, how cool is it to get their perspectives on work, careers, or nuances they encounter during their days?! Speaking with an accountant, it is probably safe to assume they have a tremendous attention to detail...like you! Use this to ask questions on their approach, how do they look at numbers to spot trends? Happy networking!
