The first step in navigating the future of fundraising is understanding the things that will not change for funders! Particularly in the context of early/growth stage businesses, knowing that investors will always prioritise the security of their capital and return on investment will orient you towards enhancing the value of your business over time; which i turn sets you up for successful future fundraises. Also, being diligent enough to learn about the strategic objectives of your funders/investors is crucial to ensuring that your proposition aligns with their long term investment plans. When you know your investors, you'll be able to create a win-win proposition for them with your future fundraising rounds

When you work in fundraising, create different disciplines, to better understand audiences and more importantly the different generations and motives of donors. Major donors require more collaboration and intense listening practices, than mass marketing which requires a different level of story telling.

Being able to understand each potential doner is vital. Find out what the needs are of the people you are talking to. How can you help them meet those needs? And look for connections through shared values.

Almost every non-profit want to diversify donors. However, trying to please bi-laterals, foundations, corporate, high net worth individuals as well as holding events need different skill set. And there is the need for investment in each. So look to diversify strategically based on mission, values , data and potential ROI.

The larger the gift, the more demand for attention there is. In a virtual environment learn to be more concise, impactful and focus on saying what you do better than anybody else. Start there first. Most forget, and end up confusing donor.

Innovation is key in today's age. If you are fundraising through cold outreach, you need to experiment with everything possible to find the best strategy. For emails and messages: Try new subject lines, CTAs, content in the email body, opening statements, etc. For phone calls: Experiment with new scripts, opening lines, donor/investor personas, call times, etc. Document everything and conduct this exercise for at least a couple of weeks to gather enough data to determine what works and what doesn’t.

Creative and comprehensive thinking is so important! Data-driven strategies, adaptability, and curiosity are so important! Talk to people! Talk to your colleagues, board, donors, volunteers, and the community for insight, ideas, and to learn what drives them. Remember that one message, one event, one strategy doesn’t fit all. Be willing to take risks and test strategies. Make sure you take the time to evaluate those and adapt if necessary. Be relatable through it all!

Yes, innovation can be useful and should be looked at constantly. However, sometimes doubling down on what you do can also be the right strategy.

I have the honor on Sept 9th of moderating a panel on this exact topic with five amazing leaders at the Raise, One Cause conference in Nashville. The term "tech" has been left out of the title as innovation is not always tech driven. We will definitely have tech leaders on the panel and will discuss tech, but we will have people talking about how you need innovation at the Board level, how you innovate operationally and how you can innovate with events. In a successful organization, innovation is never finite, but a virtuous circle that feeds on itself and allows the organization to constantly grow.
