The key for me is 1) truly unique biological insight (beyond papers), 2) proprietary technology/platform (engineering), and 3) finding an opportunity based on a wrong assumption based on dated biology in a therapeutic area (many false negatives are opportunities).

Perhaps more importantly money to attend conferences where you can both present your work (after you have protected it) and make connections with investors and potential partners, customers and employees. What many companies miss is the value of grants which can provide non-diluted capital and credibility when you are seeking venture capital

I agree that building alliances is a great way to accelerate your R&D efforts. For my company, working in a biotech accelerator provided access to lab space and equipment we needed but couldn’t afford. More importantly it provided mentorship and support that was priceless for a startup. The energy of that environment was incredible. We had formal (seminars) and informal (beer or coffee drinking) discussions which added to our R&D effort and planning. It was also fun being around similar innovative individuals.
