Balancing empathy with professionalism in emotionally charged negotiations requires active listening to acknowledge the other party’s concerns while keeping the discussion constructive. Stay calm and neutral, focusing on facts and objectives to avoid getting drawn into emotional reactions. Show understanding by validating their feelings without compromising on essential points, helping to build trust and rapport. Use clear and respectful language to keep the conversation productive, ensuring that empathy supports, rather than detracts from, the negotiation’s goals.

It's important to ensure that the negotiation strategy & tactics have taken all aspects into consideration. Especially in high-stakes negotiations. Pay attention to how your negotiation team members who have been assigned their respective roles play their roles effectively during the negotiation session. E.g. in the bad cop & good cop tactic, was the bad cop role well played? How well did the "bad cop" read the situation during the session? What about the key negotiators? Were they able to call the shots when the situation warranted it? Don't forget to study the negotiation team members of the counter party? Make a point to know who they are, their communication styles & professional background. Don't dismiss your intuition & gut feel.
