I think you need to be intellectually curious, and be playful with your spreadsheets. If you have a problem, "play" with it. Think about whether there is a different way to ask the question such that an internet search could be helpful. You don't need to memorize keyboard shortcuts to get to your =MAX() potential.

As a senior accountant, you are not expected to know everything about tax, but you want to know enough to feel dangerous. Having a high level of understanding of income taxes, payroll taxes, sales taxes, VAT taxes, and other taxes are table stakes. If you are interested in a particular area, join meetups, attend CPE/CE, and get involved with professional groups.
