Yes, people will go to cool events, post photos together etc. Don't bother with that unless u r paid to do that. Instead prove your value - find a way to push the field one step forward. Whether that's through doing research or organizing a conference to create conversation about something, publishing a toolkit/model/framework/literature- add some unique perspective to the field and keep doing that a few years in a row. Ask to collaborate with others working on similar stuff. One day some generous folks will notice you, appreciate your work publicly and then voila, you're "IN" !

A mentor can assist in the career advancement and shows the possibilities of further development which are not closely related to networking.

You need three types of mentors: one who is highly experienced and has been where you are now, another who is in a similar situation for mutual growth and fresh perspectives, and finally, a mentee who aspires to reach your level. Teaching someone else forces you to simplify and clarify your understanding if you can’t explain something to a six-year-old, you don’t fully grasp it yourself.
