One effective approach is to cultivate a collaborative culture through structured group projects that encourage diverse perspectives. Assigning roles based on strengths helps in leveraging individual talents, fostering mutual respect and accountability. Additionally, promoting open communication channels ensures continuous feedback and support, enhancing problem-solving skills collectively. Diversity is the lifeblood of innovation and expansion. It is so important to ensure that whatever you pursue includes diverse views and considerations. Learning is not for a single gender, ethnic background, age group, or orientation. In order to the effective and influential, education must be for all people. A successful leader ensures that the broadest possible types of humans are included in conceiving, shaping, influencing and delivering learning. The richness of diversity cannot otherwise be accomplished. Through diversity comes the wholeness of perspective. Through diversity comes success for everyone!

Team members need something to work toward. Establishing SMART goals ensures that all members of the team know what the expectations are - both of them as well as the group. Clearly established goals support decision-making and conflict resolution. They can be useful in managing so many aspects of group dynamics.

I've found it helpful to create a safe and inclusive space, make sure team members feel comfortable expressing their ideas or opinions without judgement or reprisals. Also encouraging respect for different experiences, background and perspectives are good examples of ways to communicate in an academic environment. Creating a culture of open and honest dialogue is essential for effective teamwork.

Trust is among the highest of values of any individual. To earn the trust of your colleagues is to be productive, honest, available, and reliable. This is to be sought throughout your career. By engaging your colleagues often and openly, you can build trust. That trust will lead to greater opportunities for you to influence programs, policies, and visions of the future. A word of warning, though, is that it is easy to overstate or over-represent your knowledge, and in doing so, destroy the trust you have so carefully built.

Navigating competitive academic settings requires a strong foundation of trust within teams. My research on the role of trust in the Art Market has taught me that professional relationships thrive when trust is built on mutual collaboration and transparency. In an academic context, trust means fostering a spirit of selfless collaboration and honesty. When colleagues see that you're not a competitor looking to take advantage, but rather someone willing to share information and support, relationships become stronger. Generosity, much like trust, is contagious, and practicing it regularly can transform how teams overcome challenges together.

Leveraging strengths requires knowing the team as well as having productive conversations with team members about their individual strengths and how those might benefit the group. Having a conversation about individuals' strengths is useful for the entire group. If individuals were selected to be part of the team for particular strengths/skills, that should be noted in the conversation as well. Knowing the strengths of all members of a team facilitates productive engagement of all team members.

Diversity is the lifeblood of success in higher education. One of the basic values that is widely recognized is to ensure that learning is equally available to all, no matter the race, gender, orientation, or religion of the person. Learning is for everyone. In delivering that learning, it is important to those of us who have been teaching and administering in higher education to ensure that we do not withhold or diminish opportunity to any person or group of people. Our role is to serve the human race. Learning is a human right every bit as much as food and the air we breathe. Know that you are a custodian of knowledge with the sacred mission to disseminate that knowledge fairly and widely to all who seek it.

If there was attention to diversity in the formation of the team, there will be differing perspectives - that's the point of the team. This should be established as a value of the team at its formation. Ensure that the group discussion rules and decision-making processes require listening to and consideration of these perspectives. Be sure to acknowledge/praise differing perspectives - even those that don't become part of the decision - to ensure team members continue to voice diverse ideas.
