In my experience, a combination of clear communication, empathy, and adaptability is essential for effectively directing models during fashion shoots. By offering specific guidance, understanding the models' perspectives, and staying flexible, I create an ideal environment for capturing exceptional shots, even under high-pressure circumstances. Communication is crucial as it empowers models and establishes clear expectations. Empathy builds trust and collaboration, making models feel supported and enabling them to perform at their best. Lastly, adaptability allows me to handle unexpected challenges and seize opportunities, ensuring the shoot runs smoothly and yields outstanding images.

There is a lot of work to be done BEFORE even a photoshooting takes place. During the preparation we write down everything that the client wants to be photographed and in how much time. Then I give them my input based on the time I know I need to get everything right without too much pressure. If you run too fast you will fail, if you run too slow, you are going lose the flow. So when on the photoshooting everyone know what to do. I instruct the models to take some key poses and after that if there is time left I give them extra orders for more special poses. The key to everything is COMMUNICATION.

Three quick tips 1) Pre-Pro If the model clearly understands the creative goals of the photoshoot, then they will need fewer moments of coaching the day of. A conversation about the concept, even just 1 day before has the added benefit of allowing for more spontaneity from the model as the model has had more time to deepen their understanding of the day's goals. 2) While on-set Keep mood boards in the sightline of the model and copies in the dressing room. Remove shots from the board you already captured and highlight those that are a priority. I guess I am saying to update the board in real time. 3) Music Fashion & music go hand in hand, but don't overdo it. It's there to support you, not to steal the show. Keep the volume at about 6.

Keep your instructions clear and concise. Phrases like "chin up," "turn slightly to the left," or "strong eyes" are quick and easy for models to understand, especially when time is limited. If time allows, briefly demonstrate the pose or expression you're aiming for. Modeling the action yourself can help clarify your direction, saving time on back-and-forth communication.
