In my experience mentoring automotive professionals, I found a simple technique particularly effective. I would ask them to walk me through a recent work challenge they faced. By actively listening to their thought process, I could pinpoint areas for improvement. For example, one mentee struggled to break down complex problems into manageable steps. To address this, we role-played future scenarios, focusing on deconstructing the issue first, then brainstorming solutions. This not only improved their problem-solving but also boosted their confidence in tackling new challenges.

Assessing my mentees current skill set allows us, as a partnering team, to understand those areas that require more time and attention. To accomplish this we can do role play and work on communication skills as well.

I have been mentoring my peers for a while now. Their transition from high school to university is quite critical. It’s so common and okay to feel overwhelmed. That also sometimes means they overlook their changes and quality. A successful & good mentor always thrive the hidden qualities amongst their peers. My suggestion would be foster a communicative environment as a mentor. Build trust, ask them questions.

The IDEAL model is a great way to get the mentee to identify the issue at hand and then define what makes it a problem. I have asked my mentees this question: If this situation had any other name than 'problem' what would it be?

Teach them logic, the logical rules of inference, critical thinking, and structured problem solving methods such as STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Providing other developmental opportunities including scenarios, role-play, problem-solving exercises all will enhance the skill set of problem-solving and communication in problem-solving.
