You're mentoring someone in Servant Leadership. What do you do when they don't seem to be getting it?

Start by assessing your mentee's understanding of servant leadership principles. Engage in open and honest conversations to gauge their comprehension and identify any areas where they may be struggling. Encourage them to ask questions and share their perspectives, providing clarification and guidance as needed to ensure they grasp the concepts fully.

I think it's important to first make sure they actually understand what Servant Leadership is. Clarity and understanding around the principles and values aligned with Servant Leadership is critical. This can be done through modeling servant leadership skills and behaviors, supporting the focus on serving others and using our own active listening skills. Evoking transformation comes through self-discovery, and as coaches, we can deepen our clients, or in this case mentees, learning by asking open-ended "what" and "how" questions and uncover where the possible disconnect is.

Relevancy is the key. If the examples and the surrounding environment are not relevant to the person of journey of the person you are mentoring - it will be difficult to understand. Clarify everything and then use relevant examples to ensure conceptual steps. Understand their background and journey will aid you in finding appropriate examples to share. Before they care what you think, they must know that you care. Discipleship

Start by exploring with your mentee what is their understanding of servant leadership and provide clarifications if necessary. Also explore with them what they might find challenging about the fact of embodying servant leadership, helping them differentiate assumptions and facts about this, asking them about the resources which could help them to embody servant leadership, inviting them to project themselves once they have become a servant leader, visualizing it and then walking backwards to identify the steps towards it. After exploring and listening to your mentee, it might also help as a mentor to share the difficulties you faced yourself in the process of becoming a servant leader and who you overcame them.

To assist a mentee struggling with Servant Leadership, I'd start by assessing their foundational knowledge to identify gaps, provide relevant situational examples, encourage self-reflection, engage in role-playing exercises to demonstrate practical application, offer timely and specific feedback, and establish SMART goals for ongoing progress tracking.

When mentoring someone, modeling what you talking about is definitely effective. A good way would be to have the mentee shadow you in your daily work or specific situations where you embody Servant Leadership. Another effective way is to jointly observe other industry leaders who are hallmarks of the same concept.

Lead by example and model servant leadership principles in your own actions and behaviors. Demonstrate empathy, humility, and a commitment to serving others in your interactions with your mentee and throughout your leadership role. By embodying servant leadership values, you provide a tangible example for your mentee to emulate and inspire them to adopt similar practices.

Communication is a key aspect of mentoring a person especially in Servant Leadership. Communication is fluid and is a multi direction process. We must choose our words and communication style carefully to mirror that of the person we are mentoring. The other aspect is the listening part and listening is more than just hearing the words they say. It is understanding their body language as reading their emotions to determine their level of comfort in each situation. Furthermore listening is an active and deliberate action to gain understanding and not to just speak back on. Take the time to listen to what they say and how they say it so that you can gain true understanding of how the process is going.

Modeling what you want someone to do is one of the best ways to teach someone. We learn by doing. More people learn by seeing then doing.

Here's exactly how I approach this... I ask them to please give me 4 to 5 words or phrases that describe exactly how you wish to be seen. Almost always, they have to think about it, which I explain is an issue. Why? Servant leaders have precise clarity with who they are and how they wish to be seen; they don't need to think about it. This empowers them to set a focused intention. I then ask, "what do you think the odds are if you have this precise clarity and you have a determined intention to be seen that way versus no clarity, no determination and no intention? It's a duh... of course the chances are far greater! Servant leaders are empowered and empower others through their own greater clarity, purpose and intention.

Challenge your mentee to stretch beyond their comfort zone and apply servant leadership principles in real-world situations. Provide support and encouragement as they navigate challenges and uncertainties, offering guidance and feedback to help them grow and develop. Strike a balance between pushing them to grow and providing a safety net of support to help them succeed.

We have always been told practice makes perfect and to a point this is true. However, it is more accurate to say repeated practice of deliberate efforts makes improvement as perfection is a great goal. but is impossible to achieve within leadership. Perfection implies you have nothing to improve and we can always improve. So don't be scared to put them into positions that require them to continually use the same skill until it becomes routine for them.

I usually ask then key questions to make then think about how would be great to serve others and how this is going to impact their results and improve the sense of belonging and fulfillment.

Encourage them to consider how their actions align with servant leadership principles and what they can learn from their experiences. Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement, where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth and reflection.

SMART goals help to keep decisions and activities in line with the organizations expectations and psychological safety must be present while having patience in your mentee as well as the people they serve. Let them fail fast but don't repeat the same mistakes. Trust is earned and learning is more fruitful in a safe environment.

I would adopt a collaborative approach by openly discussing our experiences, observations, and challenges. Together, we would reflect on specific situations where Servant Leadership could have been applied differently, exploring alternative approaches and their potential outcomes. By establishing a culture of continuous learning and mutual support, we'll work to deepen our understanding of Servant Leadership and its practical applications in agile contexts.

Hat man Zwischenschritte, Verbesserungen etc. erreicht, gilt es auch, diese zu feiern bzw. wertsch?tzend zu kommunizieren. Es geht nicht um t?tscheln oder lobpreisen, aber angemessene Reaktion auf Verbesserungen sind durchaus motivierend und helfen, den Weg weiter zu gehen.

When someone I'm mentoring in servant leadership doesn't seem to be getting it, I try to approach it with patience and understanding. I believe in open and honest communication, so I would have a heart-to-heart conversation with them to understand their perspective and any challenges they might be facing. Then, I would provide additional guidance, examples, and resources to help them grasp the concept better. It's all about supporting and empowering them to grow and develop their leadership skills. And above all, remain committed to their growth and development, knowing that your investment in their success will pay dividends for both them and the organization.
