Every Industry is changing and one has to keep themselves abreast with the current changes. Few steps to be with the tide are as follows - a) One should join a Professional Organization such as ASME, EI, Harvard Square Leaders Excellence, IET, IMarEST, IMechE, NGWA, NI, NMIS, NSPE, RINA, SaRS, SCMS and SNAME to name a few b) One should also subscribe to Industry publications, journals & magazines such as Marine Engineering Progress (MEP), Marine Technology Reporter or Maritime Reporter & Engineering News c) Attending Conferences & workshops related to Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture can offer many opportunities to learn d) To continue the Education e) To attend different Webinars and get the CPD/PDH Certificate as proof of learning

I find it useful to follow scientific journals and articles with a high reputation and credibility. This way, you can not only learn about developments, but also gain insight into potential problems and solutions. In addition, by following the journals and reports of leading companies in the sector, you can also evaluate the application of developments in the sector.

To keep up with the latest developments in this field, I use various sources of information, such as web searches, news articles, academic journals & magazines, join professional associations, attend conferences & trade shows, and industry reports. I also use artificial intelligence to analyze and summarize the most relevant and recent trends and innovations.

In my opinion CPD or PD programmes offered from different professional associations or organisations controbutes to keep track and upgrade. Todas las asociaciones profesionales son una gran fuente de difusión, aunque las mayores innovaciones se ven en los boletines o en presentaciones virtuales de nuevas técnicas o tecnologías. Hoy el mundo se ha achicado mediante la web y eso hay que aprovecharlo.

I would say the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) is wonderful, but I would also like to add the Marine Technology Society (MTS). Their newsletters are wonderful ways to see what marine engineers are interested in now and who is making advancement in these forefronts.

The problem with this is that if you don't have the backing of your company and you have to pay for your own ticket, travel and accommodation it can be extremely expensive. Of all the suggestions in this article this would be my last recomdentation. However, if you do want to attend these events I would suggets the following. Stay away from trade shows, as an individual your not looking to buy, and won't have the money to. Check if conferences have early bird discounts, if you are a member of a professional institution there is sometimes members rate tickets. Make the most of the event, see who the speakers are, at the event talk to people, bring plenty of business cards, network and follow up with contacts afterwards.

It would appearthese days diesel electric is the way forward. When I retired, Gas Turbines were the choice, but then fuel shortages forced a change in direction.

I make an effort to stay in touch with senior colleagues I've worked with on ships, but it's disheartening that many marine engineers aren't very active on LinkedIn. Since LinkedIn isn't a primary platform for job searches in the maritime industry, many of us aren't very engaged with it. Sometimes, I struggle to find a chief engineer I've worked with on LinkedIn, regardless of nationality.

Mentorship fosters learning, expands your network, and keeps you informed on industry trends. Remember to be clear about your goals and respectful of their time. It is important to always try to maintain a good relationship with your senior engineers and other colleagues on board. With their hands on experience they are able to teach and give guidance to newer employees. When going onboard a new vessel never be afraid to ask your seniors for guidance, help, and tips with your work.

One should learn and take guidance from seniors. Seniors are the helping hand for the New comers as marine engineering is a very niche profile ,One needs to have high proficient knowledge to work on the practical developments. So mentorship and feedback act as a key role for the development and growth.

Network like crazy. Keep in touch with your batchmates, your seniors, your juniors, your college professors. Basically anyone who is still associated with the Maritime industry. In these changing times, news spread like wildfire. Take advantage of your network. Share your knowledge and ask them theirs. Listen more than you talk. That's the key.

Apart from the above-it is important to note that the maritime field is on verge of a huge leap towards advancement in utilisation of new technologies, alternate ways of fuel system which can bring down the emissions. The alignment of having updated rules/regulations, ever changing statutory compliance and subsequent commercial implications to shipowners/managers is what need to be additionally considered.

En mi caso como especialista en trabajos subacuos la interacción con la Asociación Argentina de Ingeniería Naval ha sido un canal importante para compartir conceptos, generar ideas nuevas a la hora del dide?o y mejorar posibles tareas de mantenimiento futuro durante el dise?o, haciendo que muchas piezas esenciales puedan ser mantenidas sin necesidad de ir a dique seco, generando un importante ahora en tiempo y costos, asimismo el conocimiento naval me ha ayudado a lo largo de mi carrera como buzo para detectar problemas bajo agua, ayudar en correcciones o generar nuevas técnicas para reparaciones.

Dear all stalwarts of the Marine Engineering industry, am sure enough is said about reading magazines and articles to keep one abreast of the ever-changing challenges of this industry. While networking at industry events is a great way to be in touch with, there is no greater way than doing a good job that will get u noticed and hence included in discussions about the industry. For a Mechanical engg professional who has been in this industry since the past 4 odd decades (tho now looking for investors for my ship repairing unit in Mumbai) I cannot stress hard enough about inter-personal interactions while at work to also be considered a valuable asset in knowledge sharing..safe tidings to all !

Other than staying updated to the current developments; I believe it is very important to gain knowledge about the future possibilities in shipping industry. I believe sustainability is the future. In the near future, shipping will embrace sustainable practices: using cleaner fuels like biofuels, hydrogen, and ammonia, integrating solar and wind power, enhancing vessel efficiency through design improvements and advanced materials, and implementing innovative solutions like hull coatings and noise reduction tech.
