You’re a Marine Engineer who wants to improve your analytical skills. How can you get started?

1. Start learning, from manuals, from people around you, from internet, but start learning. 2. Any problem happening around you in Engine room, complete your work assigned and then become a part of that problem. 3. Start making daily notes, problems faced, how were those problems solved. 4. Never under estimate the history of that machinery. I used to surely go to the note books where my concerned machinery history was there and make notes, many times the problems were repeated one's. 5. Never TRUST what you hear, go and find out the logic behind the reason given. Many more but these 5 points come to my mind now.

1) Actively take part in troubleshooting even if they are outside your job scope. 2) It would bring in a lot of new doubts, where you have to juggle between your theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. - may end up referring various basic concepts and manufacture's mannual. Soon the results would be in front of you.

Analytical skill is basically ability to process data and give solutions. So it boils down to problem solving ability. Marine engineer, like any other engineer, acquires analytical skill during his or her training and academic pursuit. A marine engineer needs to build on this base ability and he or she gets plenty of opportunities to hone this skill as a marine engineers works with minimum resources on board a ship and needs to solve evolving problems under very challeging circumstances

It may be beneficial for us to revisit foundational principles like fluid mechanics periodically in order to enhance our analytical skills in Marine Engineering. While certain fundamental laws such as Newton's laws remain constant, the approaches to problem-solving are continuously advancing, underscoring the importance of staying abreast of developments. Engaging in discussions within forums and attending webinars can greatly enhance our analytical skills by leveraging the expertise of others in the field. This also could involve actively contributing to projects or brainstorming innovative ideas for alternative methods of harnessing marine renewable energy, among other possibilities.

Seek out opportunities to learn from experienced professionals in the field. Engage in discussions, attend workshops, and participate in networking events to gain insights and perspectives from others' experiences.

On ship, there are always 5 mandatory breaks known to every seafarer: Breakfast , morning coffee break, Lunch, mid-evening coffee break and Dinner.. The easiest way for updating your knowledge/information base is by being a part of this breaks.. a lot more happens over a cup of coffee or meal when senior crew and personnel are sharing the same common room/table.. Never to shy away from non-routine/challenging job scopes, as they might just bring in the valuable insights from the peers who might be accommodating you. There are quite a few good workshops held by the shipping companies, maritime forums held by classification societies, flag administrations, etc. which will in turn help us to bring the knowledge base on a higher ground..

With the basics in place, and learning process in control, the confidence to apply the skills can be exhibited. If there is an opportunity to be a part of a project (such as drydock, modification in piping/hull, etc), it is to be taken as an active participation. A small change in the skillset can give significant improvement to carry out the routine jobs more efficiently, and also keeps your confidence at sight when thrown into some challenging scenarios.

1. Every ship has loads of documents that contain humongous amounts of information - instruction manuals, electrical and system drawings, work journals, record books, and many more. Go through these and apply what was learnt in school. Note down questions and think about the answers. Verify these from other experienced members onboard. 2. Every piece of machinery nowadays has a Human Machine Interface that enables condition monitoring. Try to understand what happens in the background when numbers are high or low. Find out what are the normal values, and why they are deemed to be normal. 3. The Engine Control room has a log screen that records every event on every machinery in the Engine room. Take a printout daily and look for patterns.
