Designing a ship is all about compromises. There is always a price to be paid. That price tag is where risk mitigation comes in. If you handle risk correctly, the end result will be a vessel that performs the mission the owner seeks at a cost that will allow the owner to make money as their vessel performs its mission. THAT is the end goal! A great way to sharpen your risk management skills is to force yourself to keep the owner's needs in mind. Get buy in from the owner on the big risk items and how you intend to mitigate. After all, that's what he's paying you for. Sounds simple, right? I am amazed at how often I need to remind the design team of this. You want to sharpen your risk management skills? Listen to the owner!

Being a field engineer or site engineer necessitates a strong understanding of risk management because you are regularly tasked with overseeing and managing various facets of engineering projects in real-world scenarios. Field engineers must actively identify potential risks associated with their projects, which involves evaluating factors like environmental conditions, safety hazards, technical challenges, compliance with regulations, budget constraints, and schedule delays.

In aspect of risk management in safety as a marine engineer,I use three formula to manage risk in term of safety. 1.identify potential hazard 2.asses possible danger the risk may cause 3.put control on check to avoid those danger you have asses. With this three formular I believe it keep me safe on my day to day activities.

The first step of Risk Management is to have a holistic mindset and to look at the process from all possible angles. Only then can we design scenario agnostic contingencies against risks. One way of taking a proactive approach to risk identification is by staying up to date with regulatory requirements to increase risk awareness. The most commonly used method onboard for risk identification is brainstorming where we leverage the team's experience to identify risks. Other regular risk identification techniques include FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) and HAZID (Hazard Identification). Nowadays, there are also several simulation softwares available onboard that can forecast failures and help in optimising operational procedures.

There is a famous notion "Learn from others mistake" and that's applies greatly here. The companies should provide day-to-day updates of real safely incidents happens in our ships of the fleet. That would help us to stay cautious and evaluate the risks more clearly. Also, people should start working only after reading and understanding the Work Permit and Risk Assessment. They should deny to begin the job in case proper checklists are not produced by the person in-charge.

At this times many companies ,included in their policy Risk management ,applicable through an Manual, Specific Checklist and procedures .This is under continues evolution and upgrade, once new risks are identified and recognised. But the users of these instruments have often the problem to navigate through this instruments and to choose the most eficient procedure to reduce the risk. For me ,at least generating of an interactive electronic manual with terms explanations, in comments, links to forms and clear examples can improve the skills for working in more safe conditions.

Many a times seafarers neglect to wear PPE. Also, they daringly work at heights without wearing safety harness. Every individual should understand the value of their life and start following safe working procedures.

In fact there’s no project or organization can work with grantee without having a very clear Risk Assessment study in my opinion it’s the milestone to sustainability
