You're a manufacturing manager. How can you ensure your products meet quality standards?

Understanding the customer's requirements and developing SOP's around that is very important aspect of defining quality criteria. It should be easy to communicate and understand so that it should be implemented effectively.

For Quality, i believe in one sentence " Quality has to be produced, Not to be checked." When we will work in this mind set from top to bottom, then all Problems will be in only solution mode ......

Having a clear criteria with proper pictorial presentation, sensory expectations and related SOP will help the team members execute plan without major flaws. It is like having a clear vission of the final product and working towards it with proper guidelines

Quality acceptance criteria is a must to avoid any ambiguity during manufacturing a product. It is often seen that there is a disagreement between Manufacturing and Quality personnel owing to different perception of Quality standards viz rather visual criteria. Anything and everything can be improved if it is measured correctly.

Apart from having robust Quality Management Systems and Quality criteria for your product in place, effective cross-functional problem solving is essential. Deviations will occur even with the most mature QMS in place. The key is ensuring manufacturing teams have the capacity for effective problem solving to address the root cause of issues. This sets the foundations for a culture of continuous improvement. A continuous improvement culture ensures that the quality of products and processes get better every day.

Definitely it is the manufacturing manager role to assure and hood and consistent quality management system is implemented, by the way, this role also sign this plan! Any production system requires a quality system and it is fundamental to guide the actions from the top to the operators! Every one must know what rules guide this quality plan, which tools must be used, how to control and which are every and each one’s responsibility. Quality management System is the key when it comes to meeting quality standards in your organization and these only can be achieve when you have good implementation of the policy not just having them and you can do so when you have people with good orientation on Quality matters.

A Quality management system (QMS) will help develop and implement the process and procedures for ensuring the quality of each product.

Follow the system and requirements religiously and tell the society that you don't have that certifications still the business will succeed and sustain. Having all the certifications and badges and not following the procedures and processes will not give any desired results.

Statistical tools help in understanding the average performance of the models to have the best yields. Statistical tools are screening tools to identify "possible" causes, but you can't 100% believe them without the experiment results or simulation results. With theoretical-based parameters, it will be far easier to achieve the optimum process recipe in a short time. Of course, there are sometimes coincidences that show the parameter as a cause that fits the model, but it is better to have a theoretical explanation to add a strong belief that it is the root cause. Same theory we can predict the stock price based on any parameters given, but it is better to have some understanding of the company cultures and business environments.

Training and empowering people is important but I think one of the biggest challenges managers have is that they think everyone should think like they do and nothing can be further from the truth. I would suggest 3 things for any manager: 1) Get a good understanding about people - what drives and motivates them, what are their strengths/weaknesses. Everyone is different! 2) Learn to provide world class constructive feedback - it’s not about criticizing people, it’s about bringing out the best in them. 3) Be curious rather than furious - when something doesn’t go right or someone makes a mistake, become curious and ask great open-ended questions. What’s the real reason?

As a Manufacturing Manager, training and skill development are important for achieving organizational goals. Identifying the skill gaps of each associate according to a training plan should be prioritized. This approach will help improve the delivery of high-quality products and foster continuous improvement.

Meeting quality standards is the bare minimum customers expect. In many high margin, high growth industries such as pharmaceuticals and semiconductor manufacturing, quality control includes an element of feedback loop with the customer. Just because a product passes your process does not mean it will pass your customers, so as a manufacturing manager it is also your job to be well connected with the commercial side of the business to ensure that your manufacturing process is keeping pace with the needs of the market.

Firstly the mindset should be quality is everyone’s responsibility. Production manager must understand the importance of delivering quality products by adhering to below parameters 1. Encourage productivity and quality plans across the team 2. Owning the Cost of poor quality measurement 3.Problem Solving and Quick decision making. 4.Periodic Process audits 5.Encourage solution oriented approach by 8D/A3 6.Active participation on Customer complaints by making preventive solutions. Expected benefits including 1.Higher customer satisfaction 2.Minimized waste in production line reinforcing low cost high productivity model 3.Less defective products 4.Better brand reputation

Kaizen blitz: 1. Find some hungry for improvement / curious folks that have been in the org for a long time and are new 2. Tell them they’re going to be part of a multi day improvement program where they’re going to analyze, challenge themselves, and think about the process from many different angles and ask, “is there a better way?” 3. Do team building (a couple fun games where folks split into teams and work together to solve problems) and don’t forget to provider a refresher on 5s and kaizen 4. Appreciate the team for their effort and hard work & provide lunch 5 Put some of the ideas into place as quickly as possible 6. Rinse and repeat for various departments, initiatives, & process when you think you “know it all and have no issues”
