First, I’d have a candid conversation with them to understand the specific challenges they’re facing—sometimes the problem isn’t immediately obvious. Then, we’d create a development plan that targets their skill gaps, whether it’s through mentoring, training, or hands-on practice. Set small, achievable goals so they can build confidence as they improve. Along the way, provide regular feedback, focusing on both progress and areas that need more work. Encourage them to ask questions and make mistakes—they’re part of learning. Don’t give up on people too quickly. Invest in their growth. The best leaders turn struggling employees into high performers.

I believe that no one takes a job intending to perform badly. Sometimes we don't realize that the employee is missing certain skills and so I would address it and ask what they feel they need to up their game. Then, I'd find the training and support they need to improve. It may also mean that I would mentor them or find a mentor to help them for a period of time so that they know I am invested in them.
