You’re managing a team of developers. How can you make sure everyone is on the same page?

Always start with the vision, and then derive the necessary delivery roadmap to rollout that vision through team collaboration. Outcome of this exercise would be definitive goals and scope. This practice would make team to be on same page and to stay excited through out the journey.

- Listen and respect team members difference of opinion during technical discussions - Provide opportunity and environment for open discussion between team members so they can easily collaborate - Encourage them to ask clarifications and questions without hesitation, however basic the question is - Build rapport between the team members both in formal meetings and informally as well

Before you do anything sit down with your team and discuss the ways of working. It’s advisable to fully adopt agile working principles, which is all about continuous communication, iteration, feedback and collaboration. Start here and you won’t go far wrong

In my experience culture and transparency is very very important for a team. I also believe managers are the key players to drive the team forward with clear instructions, helping hands and providing every week at least once outcomes. When team members understand each other’s strength and ability it becomes easy to deliver final end results smoothly.

Communication is key! Coach the team to communicate using predefined ground rules. Spreading information radiators is also a common practice if you happen to be working on site.

As we are in the era of AI We should also encourage the use of tools like copilots for better productivity. TDD is still something that is relevant and tests should be written and reviewed before the development starts. This will make sure that the feature and scope are understood even before the development starts.

It's important to align across the team to determine how each member prefers to communicate, you can propose and discuss how the team should communicate as a whole. It's important to explicitly document this, or communicate this for everyone joining the team. If after some time the team realizes that what works in theory isn't effective in reality, it's important that you iterate until you find the best way that the team prefers to communicate in the real world. Be explicit in asking for feedback from the team. Find ways that make it safe, and painless for those on your team to share any and all feedback with you. This might include asking directly, asking prompting questions, or even by providing anonymous ways for people to provide it.

While communication is important and daily stand ups and weekly team meetings play an important role in keeping the team all synced up, it’s really important to build a sense of brotherhood in the team. Building a fraternity is no easy task and takes time. But once it’s been built the team is intrinsically in sync to a large extent. Im a big advocate of PMs developing soft skill and patience for building the fraternity in the team.

Providing a space for open honest communication where all thoughts are welcome and we encourage discussion. If as a developer you disagree with another’s decision, we encourage constructive communication over the disagreements. Many times in these discussions we find an even better solution.

- Create a welcoming environment where team members feel safe to express themselves. - Encourage open dialogue and idea sharing among team members. - Provide opportunities for team members to ask questions and seek clarification. - Schedule regular meetings, stand-ups, or check-ins to discuss progress and address concerns. - Use these meetings as a forum for brainstorming ideas and providing feedback. - Foster a culture where feedback is constructive and valued. - Ensure that everyone understands the purpose and goals of the meetings. - Use simple language and avoid jargon to ensure everyone can participate fully.

The fundamental thing was already pointed out in other comments, and I would add: active listening. Everyone wants to progress, get better on what she/he is doing, or even experiment new roles or technologies. Making that explicit to the team will help each other on their goals, thru feedback, recommendations, mentoring, coaching. When there is space for growth, the developer NPS goes up and the odds to success are higher.

In my teams I always try to implement some techniques to foster learning culture: - Workshops: Team define and prioritize a backlog of items they would like to know more, them every two weeks one of the topics is selected and one of the team members is responsible to study or prepare to do an interative knowledge transfer session to the team. The selection of responsible for the presentation can be self assignment or rotation order to assure everyone can contribute. - Hackathon: Doing a hackathon every 3-6 months is good to get out of routine and give time to team think out of the box. Proper themes should be defined to keep some safeguards. Try stimulate people interact and join teams with people they are are not get used to work with.

Learning together is one of the best ways to be on the same page. Teams that can create an environment where the most embarrassing draft of an idea or code can be openly shared and made better together are intrinsically solving the issue of people not being on the same page.

In my experience it is useful to host knowledge share sessions where the team can share solution for complex requirements or new knowledge gain in a particular area so all the team is in the same page and has the information to continue that particular work if needed. Creating documentation for innovative, reusable solutions is another good way to share knowledge. All this is also helpful for new team members as learning curve gets decreased by having the right documentation which reduces onboarding time and optimizes the team work. By fostering a learning culture everyone is aware of what they need to do, how and when they need to do it.

Continuous improvement should be one of the practice within the culture, which would drive the team towards learning as an activity than a mandate.

I agree but it is also important to celebrate the process irrespective of the outcome. Let the team feel that you as a leader “get it” - get it what it took and how hard it was.

Celebrate not only the team's achievement, but the improvements of individuals as well. Don't hold compliments to a team member that has done a really good job, or overcome a milestone in her/his career path. We are humans, social animals, and celebrating each one's achievements give us a sense of belonging, which is critical for good relationships and, why not?, for success.

As mentioned by others, it's important to share out and broadcast your wins. Make sure that those who put in the sweat equity, get the payoff of congratulations. However I do want to mention that it's just as important to celebrate your failures, and find ways to make sure that the team has a process for learning out of those. The goal should be about helping the people on your team feel rewarded for their wins, and safe to take calculated risks that may result in failure.

Celebrating Wins as a team is super important in today's distributed work place.Its not about just celebrating a milestone but also the journey the team endured to reach a milestone.All it takes is a shout-out in a staff meeting, followed up with a email broadcast to the leadership team recognising the teammates.This simple act of acknowledging/recognising can magically elevate team morale and engagement.

In my experience, Freedom is the most important and interesting thing since this generation people are gifted with AI tools. Any one of your team with different velocity point may have better idea than me. So ensuring safety checks is the best one by ensuring every one knows mission and vision alongside the goals, which will make them align with me.

- Use diagrams to explain visuals of what needs to be done, explaining complex architects, workflow... - Put developers first when it comes to Ticket refinements. - Alignments in Dailys if you are in Scrum approach, also 1x1 to know what are you missing and get feedbacks ( bi-directional)

A group of developers usually has some diversity in their ability and creativity. I try to ensure that both types can contribute effectively and measure their progress. 1. Clearly state the final aim of the project but refrain from giving specifics - This will entice the more creative developers. 2. Define a set of deliverables - This will allow the less creative to focus better. 3. Define KPIs or progress metrics - Allow both types of developers to have a measure of progress. 4. Finally create a platform to share their progress. It can be an all hands meeting or a weekly progress dashboard. Being able to measure and express their progress greatly helps in keeping everyone focused and driven.
