A project will always start by the definition of the end goal that is targeted. Therefore, looking for PM software, entails that this one allows us to define the outcomes, outputs, indicators and KPIs of the project and help us link the most detailed activity of the project to one of the above. Beyond this strategic part, we expect the software to help analyze the finances involved in the project. Therefore the software should include a budget management section, and link expenses to each single task of the project. When these are ensured, we can now look at things like project methodology, namely Agile/Scrum, reporting, ability to define milestones and tasks to achieve each milestone, collaboration with team members and more.

I don't understand why LinkedIn's collaborative articles on #BusinessInnovation include selecting a project management software. The primary objective of any innovation project is to create impactful transformation. My first invention was created in my garage with tools, friends, and materials. It was designed with a whiteboard and documented using a laptop with Word and PowerPoint. No offense to my esteemed co-contributors, but let's not confuse common project management software terminology—Sprints, KPIs, OKRs, Reporting, Scrum/Agile, inputs/outputs—with the art and science of innovation. Therefore, select any PM s/w and get on with the business of innovation!

There are several additional aspects of choosing software for innovation management that have not been mentioned yet, which in my opinion are important to consider. I’ll address two. First, depending on the sensitivity of the information you will handle and the regulations of your geographic area, you need to make a decision whether you use a cloud-based SaaS solution or one that can run locally on your own servers. Second, you need to consider the simplest system to use for your needs. Too many managers opt for complex, do it all systems that offer too many unused features - they result in steep learning curves that slow implementation and under-utilization by teams that find the input requirements take more time than they have available.
