1 Choose the right equipment

Depending on the type and scope of your project, you may need different types of equipment to measure air quality. Some of the common parameters you should monitor include particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and radon. You should also consider the accuracy, sensitivity, and durability of the equipment, as well as the ease of use and maintenance. Some of the equipment you can use are air samplers, gas analyzers, dust monitors, and radon detectors.

First identify the problem. Whether point source/ mobile source or fugitive emissions. Many times air pollution can lead from non measurable source. So, we need to have mass/heat/energy balance and its continuous monitoring. Many organisations failed to control environmental pollution due to non availability of right equipment for right pollutant. Either due to sampling difficulties, complexity of measurement or by calibration limitations. So, pre-assessment of source is first step followed by equipment selection.

O monitoramento de emiss?es atmosféricas decorrentes da utiliza??o de veículos e quipamentos movidos a diesel é uma ativiade muito importante que devemos realizar para que possamos reduzir e minimizar os impactos ambientais associados ao uso deste veículos e equipamentos. Para esse monitoramento podemos usar a Escala de Ringelmann ou o Opacímetro com calibra??o válida pelo INMETRO. Posteriormente criar um inventário destes equipamentos e criar um cronograma de monitoramento para que esse monitoramento seja mais eficaz.

Uma análise estatística robusta também se faz necessária, dada a quantidade de dados obtidos durante o monitoramento.

Know your Site and know your exposures. Based on the proposed scope of work you should develop the goals of your air monitoring program, identify your contaminates of concern, and establish air quality limits. With this in place, you can then choose the correct equipment to monitor, sample, and/or analyze what you are looking for to accomplish your monitoring goals.

Define monitoring objectives based on standards & establish monitoring objectives aligned with the specific parameters & limits outlined in the standards. For example, if particulate matter (PM) levels are regulated, set objectives to monitor & control PM concentrations. Remember to choose air quality parameters to monitor based on the identified standards. Refer to the standards to determine the recommended frequency of air quality monitoring. Identify monitoring locations based on the standards & guidelines. Calibrate monitoring equipment according to the calibration protocols specified in the standards & per the manufacturer's recommendations. Always confirm the manufacturers recommendations align with the standards requirements.

Know your Site, understand where exposures exist and how surrounding properties, neighborhoods, and pedestrians can be impacted by your operations. Segregate your source areas from safe areas, always collect and upwind as a background vs downwind to see how air quality concentrations vary across the Site. Always bias samples towards the highest indications of contamination as a fail safe.

Some additional things to consider are: - weather conditions (record things like temperature and barometric pressure during your sampling / monitoring programs) - Pedestrian and Traffic patterns (understand where your exposures exist and the best way to approach these areas) - Consider collecting duplicate samples to QA/QC your lab and/or sample collection methods.
