You're a machine learning researcher. What are the most important skills you need to have?

To become a good ML Researcher, not just you need to have very very strong math basics of ML, but also a deep interest in the current research trend. One way I would approach this is by visiting websites like IEEE, or arxiv or Google Scholar and go through as many research papers as I can in my field (Language Models, Generative Networks, Bayesian Learning, etc). Not just you have to read papers but try to implement papers that you particularly like. This was an advice given by Andrew Ng, Adjunct Professor at Stanford University, who is a Pioneer in the field. If you practice this, you can become an expert in ML Research in a really short time.

Being able to read papers and stay up to date on the literature is important for ML research. Being able to have a deep understanding of the current state of the field and what the missing gaps are is key for success in research

When I say this at least one should read end-to-end one basic linear algebra book along with solving those exercise questions. 3. Python/R/Julia/xyz lang. Master one of them and try out experimenting. 4. Keen observation. Have a keen observation. Understand use cases. 5. Probability and statistics. Yes, I put it at number 5 because that's what worked for me and I'm still going through them. Bayesian is esp pretty exciting.
