Absolutely agree. Cloud-based ERP systems are now expected by default. Any ERP systems which are not Cloud based, are not likely to be considered unless there are specific reasons justifying this. There are so many advantages in having a system hosted and accessed in the Cloud. Costs are reduced compared to on-prem systems and the risks are different (this probably warrants a separate discussion). Of course the key is to ensure that you have stable and secure assess to the Cloud system and this should be part of the wider impact assessment carried out during the business case and feasibility assessment for the implementation of the Cloud-based ERP system.

If you need to enable this type of functionality it's important that you capture this as part of your scope and requirements as the system you go for can be determined by something as simple as this. I use Microsoft Dynamics on desktop/laptop/tablet, but also on my Android Smartphone device. Whilst some functionality is limited, as is the level of data you can pull down to your phone (based on storage on your phone), it's an incredible tool to have in the palm of your hand. Gives you instant access wherever you can get a mobile signal, and worthwhile considering most definitely. AI is adding to these possibilities too.

The real point here I think is that ERP is becoming significantly more flexible to meet the requirements of the ever changing landscape we live in. It's more composable now (well the best ones are) - which means you can choose the pieces you need in your jigsaw for now and add to them later, and you pay for the bits you use. Great vendors like Microsoft and Oracle have "ERP Light" products for the SME market, that are "upgradeable" to the full products if you grow (there are of course limitations to this). I'd really try and aim for simplicity, as vanilla out of the box as possible and with a "single source of the truth" (i.e. a single Data Lake with one dataset in it), but if you can, a single cloud too - easier to protect!

Process automation and process engineering is a key playing going forward in my opinion. The term hyper automation is already being used across the industry and if your team/organization is not ready your should consider that in your plans.
