Generally speaking, there are two types of IT "management" roles; Hands on Technical Manager & Non-Technical People Leader. First it's important to understand where your passion lies, and what will bring you fulfillment. When interviewing with different organizations, be sure to ask questions so you can clearly understand what type of leader they are looking for. Moving into a leadership role that doesn't require a focus on your passion, could have negative results. Additionally, having a clear understanding of the culture is key to help you understand if the organization is structured to support and empower you.

IT manager is a generic term and the roles and responsibilities varies depending upon organization. Generally it could be one or combination of IT Infra, Operations, Security, Cloud, Applications and Projects. Ensure what are all the skills you possess and highlight those in job site profile and competencies section of resume. By this way, ATS tool will filter your profile and shortlist for matching jobs.

Start by evaluating your strengths, weaknesses, skills, and values. Understand what you're passionate about in IT management, what environments you thrive in, and what type of company culture you're seeking. This clarity will help you target your job search more effectively.

In my opinion, knowing our strenght and exposure plays a critical role while understanding the gap between where you stand today vs where do you plan to reach- your ultimate aspiration. Then plan to gain the ceredentials and real time learnings to bridge the gap.

Conduct in-depth research on potential employers to understand their business model, company culture, industry standing, and the technologies they use. Look for companies whose values align with yours and have a positive work environment.

In todays world of CRM applications the job description has to match the resume. until and unless your the top most intelligent and most wanted talent market. Before you apply update the resume with latest course you have completed or start date of the course if its already enrolled. Try to use the words in resume which are posted in job desciption and does match your skills as well. 80% resume get rejected due to lack of similar worlds in JD. Even though you have the skills but wording might be different. Resume has to match as there is less HR interventions needed to check manually for every applicant.

My Suggestion, always fine tune your resume as per the Job. Read the JD and add the Key Words mentioned there. You should have one Master Resume. One resume for every IT job will not work. Try to finish your resume in two page or one page. Speak more in interview rather in Resume.

I am a very big proponent of the company's culture and work/life balance. I also look at Glassdoor to get reviews of the company as well as former employee's feedback. Connect with employees of companies you are targeting or ask for introductions. Ask the questions that are important to you and get authentic feedback.

Attend industry conferences, workshops, and webinars. Networking can provide insider information about company cultures and open up opportunities that are not advertised publicly.

Dont apply randomly to any jobs posted on the joaboard. your resume will end up in those pile of applicants. Choose wisely where to apply check company profiles. Most jobs posted could be from the recruitment agency and just collecting resume for future purpose. Apply jobs posted directly on company portals.

Don't add anything in Resume which you are unable to explain in Interview. Visit the prospect company's website and understand their vision and mission. You should be a Subject Matter Expert of your area. Don't talk too much in interview. 80% interview cleared by body language rather your answer. Interview Panel always looking what candidate can bring to the table by his/her attitude. You have a skills and education and that's the reason you are there for interview.

Customize your resume and cover letter for each application to highlight how your experience and skills match the specific job description. Use keywords from the job listing and focus on achievements that demonstrate your capability in IT management roles.

Revise all the skills mentioned in resume. Try to go through interview questions available on youtube or in jobsites based on skills. These will help you to prepare unexpected tricky questions .

Soft skills, soft skills, soft skills. Working in IT is tricky. The one thing it often lacks is the soft skills, and manging tricky stakeholders is always a prerequisite of an IT interview.

I think, The interview process is more than a Q&A; it's a dialogue. It's not just about them finding the right fit but about me finding a place where my leadership can flourish. I prepared not just to answer but to ask—to engage in a genuine exchange about visions, challenges, and the path forward. It was about showcasing not just my ability to lead but my readiness to be a part of their story.

Beyond technical skills, prepare to demonstrate leadership, strategic thinking, and project management abilities. Be ready to discuss how you've led teams, managed IT projects, and contributed to business growth. Have examples ready that showcase your problem-solving skills and how you handle pressure.

Evaluate the company, the company's projects, the team you will work with. Only then evaluate the proposed salary and benefits.

Outline your project goals and objectives. There are so many workers beneath you that look to you for structure, and a map to adhere to. If you've got a generic project that you've done a million times, that doesn't mean everyone beneath you knows where that project is headed. Goals and objectives that you regularly re-emphasise keeps people on track and thinking about how they work with you to achieve the goal rather than go off piste.
