Civil engineering design is a broader perspective. Therefore, it's important to be more specific with which areas of design you want to get involved in; roads, structures, bridges, energy infrastructures etc. After identifying your area of interest then knowing where you stand with knowledge in that area, i.e.what do you know and what don't you know. Understand your weaknesses and strengths then work your way to improve your weaknesses. You can do further studies to gain more knowledge, attend conferences, seek mentorship to get guidance on how to maneuver the design challenges. Most importantly be passionate and patient as you transition because it takes time.

Once you have your goals in mind, you can start looking for potential mentors who have the experience, expertise, and personality that match your needs and interests. What an exciting career transition choice you have made!!!! There are lots of opportunities in Civil Engineering and this part of the industry needs you! Depending on your current expertise in construction will play into the kind of mentor you should be looking for, but nothing beats jumping in head first with your boots on the ground. Shadowing a surveyor, learning about the foundational aspects of civil work, why it is important, knowing how to balance a site, proper drainage, working with different topography, and/or types of soil conditions, etc. will be important tools for you moving forward. Once you have been exposed to this you will open doors to design, inspection, quality control, estimating - the opportunities are endless!
