You’re looking to improve your team’s landscape architecture. What software should you consider?

I’m a paper & pencil kinda guy. (No apologies).

Some software options to consider for improving landscape architecture include: 1. AutoCAD: Widely used for drafting and designing landscapes. 2. SketchUp: Allows for 3D modeling and visualization of landscape designs. 3. Lumion: Useful for creating realistic renderings and animations. 4. Adobe Creative Suite: Offers tools like Photoshop and Illustrator for graphic design and presentation purposes in landscape architecture.

The increasing flexibility and accuracy of user-friendly CAD-compatible rendering software, such as the dynamic duo of SketchUp and Lumion, has helped my team improve all aspects of our design cycle: from engaging stakeholders with more tangible conceptual design, to using renderings as a means for accountability in managing expectations of the finished construction. Too much is left ambiguous in plan view.

NONE! Hand sketching and drawing, preferably pen/pencil/marker but digital stylus are acceptable, are critical to developing a critical mind and effective design thinking.

Rhino, Grasshopper, and Land Kit. This is the only way to do rapid computational design iteration in 3D. Sketching is wonderful and useful but in a production environment with so many deliverables, this stack offers the best option to avoid a lot of redrawing. You can export info for other common software like AutoCAD, Revit, Lumion, Twin Motion, Blender, Enscape.

For this, Revit is good thats if you know how to intergrate Arch Cad, AutoCad and Revit. For Civil 3D, its best for Road design landscapes. Thats if the end target is Landscape designing.

Unlike plugins for other software, its user interface, tools, plant libraries, 3D, BIM, and GIS features are tailored for our work at small and large scales. Rhino+Grasshopper also offers possibilities here, but requires advanced users for this. Choosing software like Revit/ArchiCAD because architects use them is like a plumber using an electricians tools. BIM deliveries should be coordinated in IFC format, and landscape architects should choose the software that fits them best. VW has great tools that make our work in 3D/BIM easy.

I find VR can be helpful to present for those with difficulty visualizing space. VR and AR can allow them to see and experience their landscape design and objects at 1:1. As a design tool, it is nice to jump into a design to look around for a quick review or set views and scenes for external print, but I still prefer desktop and old-school pen-and-paper solutions for designing.

We find that 3-D modeling and illustration is integrally involved in design process, documented for clients to fully understand the landscape concept. Secondarily having done the work to create these tools we can again use them for project cut sheets and award submittal while it is very useful in selling the firm to new clients. Cad is essential to translate base information from Civil and Architecture disciplines into the model. We suggest using Rhino as it is most flexible to map contour grading with smooth transitions. Many Architects model building designs in Sketch up, the landscape modeling and sketch up files can be brought together in Lumion. This program brings the project to life with realism in still shots or video fly through.

Lumion, twinmotion and enscape are straightforward softwares to visualize as images, animation or vr scenes. If you want to add interactivity, unreal and Unity are the way to go, even trough the learning curve is much steeper and developing the project more time consuming.

Project management software can be very helpful. Be it for general project management and resource management or for the detailed analysis of projects down to the individual planning steps. It is important to note that project work in landscape architecture is fluid and that well-structured project planning does not always work equally well.

Project management software can be simple or complex. You want to make sure it can: Review project status Set reminders and follow-ups Track notes and comments Track time and cost I use Clickup for my Project Management software solution to track my landscape design projects. It saves me time and hassle and keeps everything organized. But you need to learn how to use it well and adapt it to your unique workflow, or you won’t benefit from it

We are adding LMN into the company now. This is going to be a great tool for us. It is going to take total commitment to be truly successful

If you have the basics, VR/AR is what I would invest in. Otherwise you will soon find yourself obsolete. That being said, you can’t operate without solid PM software to manage your team and client.

I would like to lead some softwares which are the backbone for architecture stuff. Includes: Autocad Software: which helps to draw 2D drawings for every project. Sketchup pro: which helps to make 3d modeling of particular landscape areas or buildings. Basically its a 360 possible rotation guide to view the structure before build. Visualisation tools: Which helps to make a visual representation of a remote model of any particular area.

The Workflow begins with Rhino and Grasshopper for parametric design, seamlessly transitioning to SketchUp for initial 3D modeling. Detailed design incorporates Revit for precision and Unity or Unreal Engine for VR and AR integration, enhanced by VRay for Rhino's realistic visualizations. World Machine is employed for intricate terrain modeling, adding depth to the design. Spatial analysis utilizes GIS platforms like ArcGIS or QGIS for site assessment. Unity or Enscape enabling immersive VR walkthroughs. Immersive client presentations leverage VR headsets (Oculus Rift) or AR devices (Microsoft HoloLens). Refining visualizations with Blender's advanced 3D modeling and utilizing Substance Painter for realistic material creation.

As LiDAR gets more embedded into our everyday devices (for example, the latest iPad Pro), plus more 3D scanning options become available, it will be worthwhile to learn about 3D scanning, digital twinning, and point clouds for gathering base information and how to work this into your work flow.

In my opinion, the most useful software for professional landscape design projects includes Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, GIS, and VR/AR Software.
