This approach secured me a director promotion before age 29. Ask your direct manager what they see as the difference between (current title) and (promotion you want). Ask them to talk specifically about what performance separates the two roles. Get them talking about the steps necessary to level up your skills without asking them directly for a promotion at this time. This takes the pressure off. When they answer you, be calm and inquisitive but ask in-depth follow up questions. Ask them what else would be necessary for someone to secure the promotion. Wrap up with a question like: is there anything else you think I should focus on that I didn't ask about? Then go work on these things and come back later to confirm your progress.

It is recommended that you spend some time with your direct line manager or boss and have an honest and open feedback session about your performance. This should cover the last year, but with a more in-depth focus on the last quarter. During this session, you should ask your manager about their vision for your career path over the next quarter and year, and what you need to do to be entitled to a promotion. Essentially, you are looking to gain clarity on the targets and skills that you need to develop to be eligible for a promotion. Once these KPIs and targets are set, you must figure out the best way to achieve them. This may mean taking classes or gaining experience and exposure through an apprenticeship.
