I prefer SHARE. Think of it as STAR+. The SAR is the same. Situation, Action, Result. The T is replaced by Hindrance: what problem did you encounter and what was the impact? The + is the E = Evaluate. Evaluate what you just said, and it’s benefit to the role or the company. The E is often what is missing for answers. Especially for students or career switchers. They might share a great example, but without at least one sentence to connected to the company role, then the example falls flat. In their mind, the example made perfect sense, but to the interviewer they’re wondering why did they even bother saying that? So SHARE instead of STAR.

When preparing a STAR answer, be sure to think about the learning or what you would do differently next time. You're being interviewed for your ability to bring a set of desired behaviours to a company - you want to show that you can reflect and learn from your experience and identify new ways of working in response.

I used to use STAR with my interview coaching clients, but they found Task and Action confusing. So I moved to CAR - context, action, results - and they find this much clearer. For added impact, frame your answers using CARL - context, action, results, lessons learned - to differentiate yourself from other candidates.

What works for me is to figure out how to make a connection with the individual(s) interviewing you. So do your research on them and find an experience you share and/or develop a point of view on something they are passionate about (e.g. previous work, a speech, whatever). Turn it into a story that a) helps you stand out so they remember you and b) helps them become confident they would like working with you.

One of the main reasons why people struggle to convert interviews is because they undersell themselves. This is something I see with my clients over and over again. We decide that our work is so small in scope that it’s not worth talking about with anyone. But when we do that, we forget that this decision is subjective. For us, managing a $1M budget might be small, but for others, that is a big deal. But when we do that, we forget that it’s not just the final deliverable that’s worth celebrating, but also the “how” to get to it. This even impacts if and how much we negotiate our offer.
