Building connection in virtual teams is quite a challenge. So when leading a virtual team, consistent and transparent communication is critical to ensure everyone feels connected to your company. You can implement regular check-ins, both formal and informal, to encourage open dialogue and give your team a platform to voice concerns, share ideas et al.. Tools like Slack or Zoom (and further) are good for team-wide conversations, but don’t underestimate the value of personal one-on-ones to address needs individually. I noticed at one of my early-stage companies that a weekly 10-minute stand-up with team members created stronger trust and collaboration in the long run. The effect was significant and the investment limited.

To my virtual entrepreneurial team, I regularly, often openly, communicate and take initiatives to hold virtual coffee chats or team-building activities that will inculcate more personal connections. Recognition systems are also implemented for me to continuously encourage the member's ability to celebrate one another's accomplishments, big or small, during the weekly meetings. I also encourage the culture of inclusiveness; that is, I ask them for their input on decisions and projects, making sure that everybody's voice is heard. When all these practices are integrated together, I develop an environment in which the people being treated as important and respected will encourage people to be collaborative and innovative.

When team members feel valued and involved, they’re more motivated and engaged, even in a virtual setting.
