Leading a team with a diverse background is fun because you get to work with different perspectives and methods, which can only lead to better research. First, I'd say that the most important thing is team-building. Just like in any other project, where your team has different skillsets, you need to put the main objectives before the actual structure of the team. In research, this isn't easy because there is a natural hierarchy of research abilities and of course disciplines, and this of course can be a barrier to creating a strong team unit. However, leveraging everyone's skills to come together over a common objective is how one can motivate different team members, and make sure that everyone has an equal voice when deciding on methods.

In leading a team with diverse research backgrounds, I've found that aligning on a shared vision and leveraging individual strengths fosters a collaborative environment. During a recent cross-functional project, I implemented the RACI matrix to clarify roles and ensure everyone contributed their expertise without overlap. By encouraging open forums and regular syncs, we created a culture of transparency and knowledge-sharing, where each member felt valued and aligned with our end goals. This is exactly what I would want, a team with diverse research backgrounds. In my experience, it's less about their research background and more about their personality traits which is the challenge. To understand more about each individual in your team, I recommend everyone take the DISC personality test. This is is a tool that assesses an individual’s personality and behavior, categorizing them into four primary types: Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). Each of these types represents a distinct approach to interacting with others, solving problems, and working in a team. Understanding DISC types can help improve communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution.

Promote cross-disciplinary projects! Identify project areas where different research disciplines intersect, creating sub-teams with complementary expertise. For example, a biotechnologist and a data scientist might collaborate on bioinformatics analysis. Such collaborations help team members see the practical value of combining their strengths.

To foster collaboration in a diverse team, create a culture that values each member’s expertise through knowledge-sharing sessions and aligned goals. Use tools like Slack, Miro, and Google Docs for real-time collaboration, ensuring seamless communication and engagement for all team members.
