You’re leading a Renewable Energy project. What skills do you need to have to make it a success?

Leading any kind of project requires two kinds of skills; CORE skills which is common for all kinds of project and TECHNICAL skills which is specific to the nature of the project. CORE skills like project management, communication, organization and team building. TECHNICAL skills which are specific skills for RE project like measuring environmental impacts, cost benefits analysis and sizing (common with solar Installation), weather forecast, etc… It is also important to note that you don’t have to be an expert in the SPECIFIC TECHNICAL skills for RE project if you posses a high level of the required CORE skills, as you can always build a team of experts to execute a given project.

As a Renewal Energy Project leader, I would look at: 1. Size/capacity 2. Scope of work 3. Topography 4. Water source 5. Evacuation point & distance 6. Road access to the site 7. Availability of local unskilled workers 8. Budgets & financial matters 9. Areas where cost could be saved 10. Applicable standards and permits 11. Team composition and technical support 12. Post project management 13. Stakeholders and engaging with them

As a project leader you must have the basic understanding of the basic technical matters. Renewable energy could be of different kinds and each kind has different technical aspects to deal with. .

In managing renewable energy projects, I have learned that the involvement of stakeholders - such as residents of apartment buildings for PV and local residents for wind - is crucial to success. Unlike shareholders, who primarily have a financial interest, stakeholders are directly affected by project impacts. By creating dialog forums and community engagement sessions, we have shaped an inclusive atmosphere where all voices are heard. This not only promoted project acceptance, but also enabled solutions that strengthen social cohesion and long-term benefits for all stakeholders.

As a project leader, engaging with different stakeholders is very critical. Stakeholders would be Internal, External and Local. Internal Stakeholders - Reporting authority, financial team, supply team, design team, technical support team, execution team External Stakeholders - Customer (could be external or another department in the same company), regulatory authorities (for permits, inspections etc), media, etc Local - neighbourhood communities, local bodies, local suppliers, local unskilled workers, etc

There is always a scope of innovation and creativity. As a project leader, one should coordinate with the design and commercial team to explore the possibility of making maximum use of land.
