Remote work will test the faith of a leader, in the qualities called trust, empowerment and the ability to delegate. If the team believes they own the problem, and the customer, these automatically happen. Processes and tools can be Digital Aids, but not it. Same with standup meets and SCRUM meets. It is finally about collective faith and trust. That does not happen overnight, for the risk of empowerment is also the risk that the team or an individual could fail badly. But then, failure teaches the greatest lessons in life, and helps grow. This is where a true Leaders traits become visible. Like the invisible hand that holds the soaring Kite on a thin string, letting it fly high, amidst strong winds, but only steering and guiding it.

Programs and teams are nothing without people, so build trust and rapport with the team first, especially if the group is new to one another. Schedule an introductory call with each team member and encourage the team to do the same. Before you talk deeply about the program, start with introductions and backgrounds. This allows personal anecdotes to come up that you can point back to later that makes the team feel valued. Once the introductions are completed, you can hear what each team member is excited or worried about for the project and incorporate it into your plan. The human element of program management will always be paramount, it should be your initial focus for any project or new team introduction.

In a fully remote environment, trust and empowerment are important. The usage of collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or Slack is important. Leaders should set clear expectations and then sufficiently empower the employees to do the assigned work. One recommendation is the establishment of a consistent rhythm of team meetings (weekly, monthly, etc) and 1:1 time with their direct leader. Additionally, setting a response time for direct communications within the team helps with building rapport as well.

Building trust is a responsibility of each individual and a necessity for a leader/manager. As a leader we can't call or write to someone for the first time or any other time which might be considered as a threat or the stakeholder doesn't understand your reach out when you are not their supervisor. Positional power is to be understood and needs to be practiced well with the stakeholders who fall under your purview. In remote environment if someone is reporting to a boss in another geography and another stakeholder is giving another set of order which doesn't suits the candidate then this needs to be sorted out amicably. Be a problem solver and don't push an issue that leads to a meltdown or to a complete breakdown.

If this is a new team that you've not worked with in the past, don't focus 100% on the task in hand all the time, try some ice breakers at the start of meetings with the team so that you get to know them and them each other. Be clear on the expectations and outcomes to be achieved. Celebrate success in the team

Start virtual coffee breaks or informal, non work related conversations to provide a human touch. Inspire your coworkers to do the same by sharing anecdotes about your hobbies and experiences. By doing so, we can get to know each team member better and bring a human touch to the virtual environment. Try something new, like holding team-building games or events online that don't have to be limited to the office.

Investing in training and coaching sessions! Now that's an add-on you can't afford to miss out. It builds proficiencies, it improves capabilites, it drives confidence and it leads to value delivery through repeated high performance.

My recommendation is to include immersive experiences in addition to the more conventional learning platforms. Establish a programme of virtual mentorship that matches team members according to their interests and/or abilities. In addition to facilitating the sharing of information, this individualised method helps to build a strong support system among team members. You might want to think about setting up online 'knowledge swap' meetings where people on your team can exchange their specific insights and abilities. Both the team's diversity of skill sets and the accessibility of education are enhanced by this.

Sit down with employees, either individually or as a group given the circumstances, to discuss your expectations. This does double duty by strengthening team spirit and establishing a foundation of mutual understanding. To help team members stay healthy while working remotely, start a virtual well being channel or forum where they may anonymously share stories, links, and advice.

Leading a remote team as a town mayor in a small town adds a special flavour to these leadership concepts, I've witnessed. When you're mayor, you have a responsibility to set an example for your constituents by acting compassionately and professionally. In order to engage with residents and openly communicate project updates, you can hold virtual town hall meetings or open forums. By striking a balance between his public duties and his own health, the mayor proved that even powerful people need to take care of themselves. By creating a digital suggestion box or platform, my council hoped to encourage residents to work together in a manner more typical of a tight knit community.

One of the most powerful methods to foster engagement and commitment within your team (including yourself) is to identify the state of 'flow' for each member. Flow occurs when there is a balance between a challenging task and the application of adequate skills. By delving into where your team members experience this optimal balance, you can prevent them from slipping into states of confusion, boredom, anxiety, worry, or excessive control. In essence, an engaged team doesn't solely emerge from interesting work; rather, it stems from creating opportunities that align with the unique needs and preferences of each individual.

Here are a few suggestions 1) working agreements with the team about their availability, timings of meetings, goals for the specific period, DOD etc 2) Daily standups at the beginning & end of the day 3) collaborative communication tools like teams, JIRA, ADO, etc so that teams can share their comments on the progress 4) dependencies to be called out for discussion with a clarity on critical path 5) Check on the velocity , reaching the milestones etc with transparency 6) Respect towards each member 7) Recognition of the contributions 8) Sharing (best practices )/ Caring among the team 9) More importantly, regular feedback loops from management & Customer

While it is important to set clear expectations, build trust and rapport, foster a culture of learning, support the team, and lead by example, it is equally important to monitor and continuously innovate and improve the performance of the team. I advocate the 3-T principle: Think out of the box, take initiative, and take ownership, as absolutely essential for achieving peak performance and high productivity.

During COVID-19, I and my team transitioned to remote work practice. As members of multiple supplier evaluation committees, we were working on projects that required extensive cross-functional collaboration. Our day started with a kick-off meeting to outline objectives, followed by task distribution and a mid-day check-in call to monitor progress and/or address issues. Though the routine imitated a typical office setting, it lacked the emotional quotient. So, instead of a mid-day check-in call, I made way for virtual coffee breaks wherein we would have discussions over a cup of coffee/tea, allowing team members to foster interpersonal connections, share ideas, and unwind, ultimately leading to an increase in team morale and performance.

All of the above topics remind me that culture beats strategy every day. Tracking and communication tools will change. Processes will change. Priorities change. As a leader, build the culture on your team to not just adapt to change but thrive in change. This is especially true for remote teams. I work with teams spread across the country. Be clear about everyone's role and your expectations. Then remember that everyone is human with real lives outside of work.
