The key to making everyone feel connected and included is a strong mix of asynchronous communication (collaborative documents, email) and a consistent cadence of video calls, both 1:1 and as a team. Having led a team across timezones at both Google and Meta, I also ensured that remote team members had substantive roles to play in projects that brought them together collaboratively and built bonds on a personal level with one another

One thing I’ve found useful is taking the time to really get to know your remote employees, and have regular 2-way feedback. Sharing updates to everyone at the same time is key, as well as intentionally organising social and team-building activities, and ensuring they are included in all decision-making, meetings, etc. Knowing how they like to be recognised, what’s important to them, and supporting them with the challenges of remote working can all help. 1:1s can be leveraged very effectively for this. Additionally, being aware of any proximity bias is important - it can be unconscious, and it’s crucial to ensure that remote employees are transparently given the same opportunities and information as in-office teams.

The answer to this question is the invention of teleportation devices like that Star Trek transporter. With devices like that you can get everyone in the office, while bypassing regular travel hassle like dealing with the TSA and having to get visas. With a teleportation device your office waffle party or music dance experience will have 100% attendance! This is the ultimate inclusion device. For regular stuff email and Slack suffices, but without a teleportation device your waffle parties will be sad and your music dance experience might as well play country & western.

To ensure a remote team feels included and informed like in-office staff, prioritize regular and structured communication. Utilize video conferencing for team meetings to foster a sense of connection, and ensure all team members can participate equally. Implement collaborative tools that facilitate real-time updates and project tracking, keeping everyone aligned. Schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress and address any concerns, making sure to encourage open dialogue. Celebrate achievements publicly through virtual channels to recognize contributions and build team morale. Finally, solicit feedback on remote work experiences and adapt strategies to enhance inclusivity.
