There are more than 70 different large group methods the most popular of which are Open Space, World Cafe, Future Search, Real-Time Strategic Change, and Appreciative Inquiry Summits. As someone who has done a few large group facilitations, I think a performance evaluation approach to facilitation is misguided. Of course, there has to be plenty of preparation(Months) before the event. However, I have facilitated a couple of Open Spaces that were spontaneous. Large group methods focus on trusting the process and emergence. Emergence is antithetical to outmoded approaches focusing on measurement and forcing an outcome. Plus, sometimes, the main impact comes from putting the whole system in the room and just people connecting with each other.

Designing performance evaluations for large group facilitation does not come with a one-size-fits-all approach. Nonetheless, there are some general steps to follow, such as defining the purpose and scope of the evaluation, choosing the methods and tools, implementing the evaluation, and reporting and using the results. When choosing the methods and tools of the evaluation, consider what kind of data is needed and how to collect it. Lastly, when reporting and using the results of the evaluation, consider how to present and share the findings and recommendations of the evaluation. Utilizing these steps can help to improve your facilitation and group performance.

Criteria of success to be clear. This includes how to get the points. For example when we play x y game for negotiation, how many x to get 10 points like 3x and 1 y the three tables with x will get 10 points while the table that has indicated y get -10. This is to ensure integrity of the activity and ensure that whatever we promise gets rewarded

Because performance evaluation comes from an antiquated mechanistic paradigm that is focused on control and measurement, large-group methods do not particularly lend themselves to performance evaluations. Still, there are things that one can look into. For example, one of the leading (&observable) indicators could be the number of ideas generated, the number of problems "solved," or the number of breakout rooms(in the case of Open Space). Lagging indicators could be things like psychological, safety, trust, conflict, projects accomplished, new products launched, products launched on time, number of defects, and so on. The choice will depend on the specific large-group method chosen. It might also depend on the ease of measurement.

4 How to conduct self-evaluation for large group facilitation?

Self-evaluation can be a great tool for personal and professional development, helping you to reflect on your own performance and learn from your experience. When conducting self-evaluation for large group facilitation, use a framework or checklist to guide your process, such as the Kirkpatrick model which evaluates four levels of learning outcomes. It's also important to be honest and objective with yourself, recognizing both your achievements and challenges. The overwhelming majority of large group facilitations are done by external facilitators. The Kirkpatrick model which evaluates four levels of learning outcomes has moderate utility. The last two levels of evaluation (behavior and results) are lagging indicators and will not probably be observed until long after the facilitation engagement has ended(with the exception of perhaps of Real-time Strategic Change). In my experience, the best indicator of good performance is what happens during check-out when the facilitator as questions like: What are you taking away from today? What is your greatest learning? What went well and what did not? The quality of the checkout will tell the facilitator if they did a good job.
