I find that facilitation sessions have the greatest impact when my audience does more of the talking. In order for this to happen, I have to be really keen in mining the material for opportunities to engage the team with open questions, giving me more opportunities to mine content from the group through active listening. This also helps me better understand if the key learning points are landing with the audience, or if some redirection is necessary. But regardless of the response, approaching each participant's feedback with an attitude of curiosity and compassion (ACC) helps maintain a feeling of safety within the group, and encourages folks to speak up more freely.

Everyone wants to feel heard. When things get tense within a session, sometimes just acknowledging someone's point of view can be enough to diffuse mounting tension. I experienced this in one of my first facilitation settings with a student who disagreed with almost all of the curriculum points. When asked for feedback, he would go on about his experience and how what we were teaching wouldn't work, and express what he had learned from his many years of study. Fortunately I had a mentor present who helped me see that this man just needed to have his experience acknowledged and his voice heard. When I was able to provide that, he was content to move forward with the session, and even became more cooperative as the training unfolded.

I’m not certain we can “put aside our biases” but we certainly can work to understand them. be cognizant of when they may raise their head, and be self-aware throughout the facilitation to ensure they aren’t driving your choices, actions and words.
