- Understanding Expectations, - Laying the ground rules (of confidentiality and safety) - Para phrasing and checking in with them if they are being understood correctly and what is it that they mean - Acknowledging their emotions and Validating their feelings - Being Inclusive and welcoming diversity - Having checkpoints within the discussion to ensure that everyone is aligned and is given fair delivery points as committed.

2 Set Norms

Establishing clear norms is crucial for maintaining rapport in large group discussions. At the outset, encourage participants to agree on guidelines for interaction, such as respecting speaking times , listening actively , and valuing different viewpoints . This collective agreement not only fosters a safe space for sharing but also empowers participants to hold each other accountable. - Share the norms while inviting the participants. - Set clear rules like no personal attacks, name-calling, disrespectful gestures, etc - Share a list of positive and respectful re-framing with examples ( Instead of saying, "You're wrong. you could say, "Let's explore different perspectives on this point.")

Use techniques like round-robin or breakout sessions to ensure that quieter members have a chance to share their thoughts without being overshadowed by more vocal participants. By actively seeking out diverse perspectives and valuing each contribution, you demonstrate that every voice matters, strengthening the group's trust in the process and in you as the facilitator.

Some of my favs are: - Round Robin (everyone gets a chance) - Art Based Journalling Followed By Expression Of their medium using an hourglass (this allows everyone to brainstorm individually, find their answers, to gather their thoughts and express it streamlined) - Sticky Notes to have their questions/ inputs written down while someone else is speaking. If its addressed within the session, the sticky note is folded. Else be taken up later. The folded sticky notes and the open sticky notes are used for origami at the end (which is also a reflection for the facilitator) - Reminder of pre-set boundaries with a visual aid, e.g., a board that reads x minutes left, y minutes left, and time to pass the mic.(Non-offensive & a decent reminder.)
