When starting a new project it is important to communicate your goals to your team in order to make sure you start off on the right foot. It is also important to listen to your team and pivot goals as needed in order to complete the project with the best possible results.

Establishing a clear vision for your robotics project is crucial. This acts as a guiding star for your team, aligning their efforts towards a common objective. When priorities conflict, refer back to this vision to evaluate which tasks or ideas contribute most effectively towards the end goal. It's important that this vision is not just understood, but also shared by all team members. Encourage open discussions about how each function's work contributes to the vision, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment. This helps in prioritizing tasks that are critical for project success and ensures that everyone is working towards the same future.

Robotics Projects, normally, have multiple objectives. It is imperative to prioritize and define narratives of implementing robotics. Quite many times, managing a deadline, often the second and third order vision objectives are not fully met. For this reason, setting a clear vision with step by step narratives and its weightage is very crucial. Also whilst defining this, it is better if all stakeholders such as customer, internal team, vendors and management is fully updated. This will ensure the vision is percolated until the bottom most rank and any work complies to the set vision.

Maintaining an open dialogue is key to managing conflicting priorities. Encourage team members to express their concerns and ideas openly without fear of dismissal. This transparency allows for a deeper understanding of each function's challenges and contributions. By actively listening, you can identify the root causes of conflicts and address them before they escalate. Moreover, regular communication helps in synchronizing cross-functional efforts, ensuring that everyone is aware of the project's progress and how their work fits into the larger picture.

In a typical robotics and integration project, few of the departmental or cross functional teams come across conflicting priorities. Tasks should be prioritized by team and skillset, but it's your role as the manager to ensure that these tasks are all driving towards one singular goal. Aim for the baseline to deliver on what your client's expectations are initially, and add innovation when you can.

To resolve a conflict in a team, empathy is such an important skill - making sure everyone is understood (not only does the mediator need to have the ability to take on another's perspective, but also make sure that the team understand's each others thoughts). Everyone in the team needs to get the opportunity to explain their point of view - and team members need to acknowledge that opinion even if they don't agree. Discussions need to be properly coordinated. From my experience, this works best with an interactive activity. Once the conflicts are pinpointed, the whole team can work on how to solve them. It's really important to have a good team spirit, so all members are motivated to work on a solution together and are open to trade-offs.
