This can lead to confusion, frustration, and boredom among your participants, as well as wasted time and resources. To avoid this, you need to plan ahead and do your homework. Research your audience, their goals, and their challenges. Define the purpose and objectives of your session, and choose the best methods and tools to achieve them. Create a detailed agenda, and test your materials and equipment beforehand. Also, anticipate potential issues and have contingency plans ready.

2 Poor communication

Another common mistake you can make as a large group facilitator is to communicate poorly. This can result in misunderstanding, disengagement, and conflict among your participants, as well as missed opportunities and outcomes. To avoid this, you need to communicate clearly and effectively. Use simple and concise language, and avoid jargon and acronyms. Explain the rules and expectations of your session, and check for understanding and feedback regularly. Sometimes I have expected some sort of response from participants for a particular activity/question because the point I'm trying to drive in or my debrief depends on that. What happens when one doesn't get much response or the apt response? We should be flexible for a variety of responses and our expertise depends on altering debrief based on that and still add value. Then being rigid with difficult participants as labeling them as not open to learning or negative influence. Each person has humaneness within and if something isn't making sense to someone, that's her journey and not for us to decide. If we become uncivil because of someone, it's not right. That's where setting rules/boundaries becomes important in the beginning.

5 Lack of follow-up

Another common mistake you can make as a large group facilitator is to neglect or delay follow-up. This can result in loss of momentum, accountability, and impact among your participants, as well as wasted learning and potential. To avoid this, you need to follow up promptly and effectively. Summarize and share the key points, outcomes, and actions of your session, and thank your participants for their involvement. Solicit and provide feedback, and identify areas for improvement and development. Support and monitor the implementation and evaluation of your session, and celebrate the achievements and successes. Also, maintain and nurture the relationships and networks that you have built.

One of the most important lessons I have learnt in this context is from my military service. You may have planned for a hundred contingencies and your enemy may spring the 101st. So learn to think on your feet. To handle such situations in Facilitation too, one must develop the ability to think on one's feet. Just as in a military operation,the commander takes a very short pause when things are not going as planned and pivots, as a Facilitator, I have done the same on occasion and been able to pivot. Trust your plan was another tenet I learnt in the Army. Likewise, in Facilitation, trust the process you have designed. Let it run its course and think ahead of how you might conduct the debrief from what is emerging.
