This is a critical challenge as you get into leadership roles. How do you ensure enough efforts are put in towards the long term goals when day to day tasks keep piling up. Some things that I’ve tried which have helped - 1) Calendarize time for strategic tasks - Block 1-2 hours early in the morning before the day to day sprint begins to think and work on long term goals. Ensure this is blocked at a relatively free time so that no other meetings override it. 2) Simple Tracker- Very important to track input and output. Key here is to find simple tangible inputs/outputs to track periodically. 3) Get a coach: Regular touch points with the coach is a way to monitor progress. You may make efforts just because you have a catch up with coach! ??

This is a challenge for all leaders, but particularly first-time/new leaders. Finding the right blend of the two is important and it starts with having a clear understanding of what your goals and your success metrics are. If you're success metrics are based around implementing a strategic vision, one strategy is to empower and trust your team with more of the day-to-day tasks. If you've built a team rooted in trust, you're able to give stretch assignments or exposure to tasks to other to allow them to stretch and grow, while also giving you the time back to focus on delivering the strategic side.

Fazer malabarismos entre planejamento estratégico e tarefas diárias pode ser desafiador, mas é essencial. Recentemente, enfrentei essa situa??o ao precisar preparar um relatório importante enquanto lidava com solicita??es urgentes da equipe. A solu??o?

Balancing strategic planning with day-to-day tasks requires a clear prioritisation framework. Typically, the Eisenhower Matrix categorises tasks by urgency and importance, ensuring that critical long-term goals are not overshadowed by immediate but less impactful activities. Regularly revisiting and adjusting priorities based on evolving business needs and team feedback can also help maintain alignment and focus.

Picture your priorities as a river system. Strategic initiatives are the main channel – powerful, directional, carving the future path. Daily tasks are the tributaries – vital for flow but shouldn't overtake the main current. True agility isn't about jumping between streams; it's about understanding their interconnection. Question we should ask: 'Does this tributary strengthen our main flow?' Small tasks should feed into larger impacts, not create stagnant pools of busy work. The key is maintaining 'strategic altitude' – regularly rising above the daily current to check your course, while ensuring your team has clear channels to navigate. Use the impact ripple test: which choice creates the strongest positive waves downstream?
