You're juggling conflicting design preferences in an interior project. How do you find a harmonious balance?

I believe by having a detail conversation with each person involved understand their preferences priorities and what they absolutely absolutely love or dislike about the space first. This will help a designer grasp the sense of what each person is drawn to whether it’s a particular color scream, or furniture style or overall vibe, and then determine what elements are non-negotiable for the client that helps narrow downing the preferences, and guiding us to make a decision.

To balance conflicting design preferences, I start with detailed consultations, presenting various design approaches, mood boards, and reference images. This helps identify 'Must-Have' elements like specific colors, materials, or furniture. I then apply an iterative process, introducing a few elements from each preference and adjusting as needed. This allows the design to evolve naturally, ensuring a harmonious space that respects all preferences. By approaching the project with flexibility and a focus on integration, you can create a space that honors both design preferences while maintaining a sense of unity.

I start by identifying the core goals of the project to develop a clear vision or theme. I prioritize the different preferences, ranking them based on importance and feasibility. To visualize and integrate elements, I create a mood board, applying some preferences to larger, permanent elements and others to smaller, interchangeable details. I look for compromise solutions and hybrid designs to bridge any gaps. Applying design principles like balance, contrast, and harmony helps me integrate preferences cohesively. Open communication and collaboration with clients and stakeholders are key for me to ensure their preferences are addressed. Staying flexible throughout the project helps adapt and find the right balance.

It is important to determine the entire desired outcome for the design, and then set priorities for quality and style. There are projects that require context, and then there are projects that allow maximum creativity. I like to push the bar higher, and aim for great results.

We require a concept board review meeting with all of our clients to make sure that the preferences they are articulating in words are clearly identified through visuals. Imagery is the universal language that creates cohesion and balance to any design development plan.

Moodboards are indeed a great mechanism that helps people who are not very creative visualisers , when you put things together the texture, the feel, the real colour, the pattern when they see them together they get a fair idea about how this will really shape up. Even though some people have challenges there as well, as they can’t understand the scale of it , its a good practice to explain them transparently and clearly about what can they expect and how there can be a bit variation too in what they see and what comes out on a larger scale. Having them mentally prepared not for the worst but for realistic expectations, will help a lot in not dealing with any conflicts as such. Moodboards have helped me and my clients immensely.

For certain clients moodboards are only applicable once they finalise on the visualisation of the space. Implementation of design ideas through visual treat like renders or models are a better option rather than just showing a bunch of materials bought together.

Neutrals play the key role when there is a conflict in designs. It is the most safest way to design without being wrong. With 60,30 and 10 rules can be applied with Neutrals very well and can create wonders.

Using a neutral base kind of establishes a foundation, whether it’s a form of wall, color, flooring or large piece of furniture, it can act as a blank canvas that allows designer to add various style to exist without clashing, for example, if sofa is a neutral color, then various textured pillows and accessories can layered on and used in the room that create an elegant look. Once the base is set, then we layer in different styles through smaller interchangeable elements like rugs decor as this allows our clients to easily update our change some elements if needed in future.

There is certainly a time and place for maximalism, whether in color palettes, textures, millwork or furniture details, but if that time and place is not your project you will need to use grounding elements. Yes, neutral colors fall into this category; you can get away with nearly any color as an accent against an achromatic backdrop. But color is an incomplete solution to reconciling multiple design aesthetics with each other. If you are working with dynamic patterns, use minimalist, monolithic forms as a balance. If you are working with ornate millwork, try lowering the contrast. If a pattern on one plane is busy, use a homogenous finish on adjacent planes.

Once all the elements are in place by taking a step back and editing the space if necessary is my mantra. Sometimes removing or rearranging items can bring balance and harmony. By incorporating accessories or artwork that tie the different style together you are unifying the space these finishing touches can create a sense of unity within the space.

Tenemos que saber diferenciar "Ser creativos" con "Necesito llenar este espacio" porque si bien es cierto, no todos tenemos los mismo gustos, hay que saber cuando parar. En cualquier dise?o es muy notorio cuando algo "está por estar" y no tiene un motivo sólido por la cual se haya agregado.

In my perspective compromising creatively is not really a compromise of any kind, its rather a win win for all the people involved- designer and clients both for creating something that is fundamentally practical yet has a personalized touch of the people who are going to live in the space, it is all about finding that balance , that common ground where the form meets function and has the desired aesthetics that is in vogue and also is appealing to the clients as per their taste, it is all about how well we make them aware about the do’s and don’ts of going with a particular choice that they may be very adamant on.. It is about understanding deeply and then using persuasive skills to meet them midway to ensure a great outcome.

Hay que tener cuidado a la hora de mezclar y combinar, ya sean estilos, texturas, colores, etc... Es muy fácil desviarse de la idea principal si no sabemos tener un equilibrio con las combinaciones.

When designing modern interiors I always like to add some good antique pieces to eliminate the clinical feel that modern can create. I like Victorian pieces or a light Edwardian console.

The dilemma of the conflicting styles is something of an issue with first identifying each style and then mixing the two to create a new style for the couples new home. Like relationships, design is a limitless mixture of possibilities between lifestyles, comforting relatable moments, and colorful special occasions respectful of the relationships between furnishings in their home. We are designing new transitory styles to fit the new modern family unit, consisting of unions between cultures, genders, recycled families and unprecedented companions. Interior design once had one fitting genre has become hyphenated. To name a few like Glamour-industrial, Asian Greco, or farmhouse-chic to create the essence of each style in a new combination.

By embracing the challenge of blending conflicting design preferences, we can create a space that feels unique, personalized and harmonious. The process may require creativity, promise communication, but the end result will be beautifully, balanced interiors that reflect the personalities of the home owner who will enjoy their homes for years to come!

Starting with a tailored questionnaire should help to define wants, needs and particular styles. The concept, plans, elevations and renders that follow help to visualise the project. We often find that 2-3 different layouts with pros and cons allow the client to think about different perspectives, and the same for us as designers. Different layouts can also encourage flexibility around preferred styles and place a focus on the functional aspects of the space.

Por otro lado, cuando hay ideas contrastadas, no ésta del todo mal; quiere decir que te falta modular en el sentido de encontrar secuencias en común, ya sean colores, algún patrón o estampado, algún gariboleado o una secuencia en orden dentro del ritmo del espacio. Porqué sí en los espacios y en el dise?o existe el ritmo visual. Son constantes. Encuentra algún Leitmotif y úsalo para generar entornos agradables.
