1 Know the basics

You start off initially by making sure what is the mission/objective of a company, what issues is it trying to solve, who are its target audience. Knowing these are usually enough. The key is to know enough, not a lot.

You are prepared to answer the question based on the research you have done, ahead of time, on the company and specifically on the area/department in the company you are applying to. Dovetail your work experience/knowledge presentation with those areas to show how well you fit the particular position. If you are able to research the background/career experience of the individual who will be interviewing you, do it! That way you can comments on his/her contributions/leadership skills without sounding sycophantic (although, don't overdo it).

You should also know how the role you’re applying for fits into the company’s goals and strategies. You can find this information on the job description, the company’s career page, and the LinkedIn profiles of current or former employees. Try to identify what skills, knowledge, and experience the role requires, what challenges and opportunities it faces, and what impact it has on the company’s success. Write down some examples of how you can meet the expectations and add value to the role.

You should also know what kind of culture the company has, and how you can fit in and contribute to it. You can find this information on the company’s website, social media, blogs, podcasts, videos, and reviews. Look for clues about the company’s values, beliefs, norms, behaviors, and communication styles. Write down some words and phrases that describe the company’s culture and how you can align with it.

4 Tailor your answer

Now that you have gathered enough information, you can tailor your answer to the specific company and role. You don’t have to memorize everything you’ve learned, but you should have some key points and examples ready. A good answer should start with a brief introduction expressing your interest and enthusiasm for the company and the role. You should then provide a summary of what you know about the company’s mission, vision, values, products, services, customers, competitors, and achievements. Additionally, make sure to connect your skills, knowledge, and experience with the role’s requirements, expectations, and goals. Lastly, demonstrate how you can fit in and contribute to the company’s culture and values.

5 Practice your answer

The last step is to practice your answer out loud until you feel comfortable and confident. You can use a friend, a family member, a mentor, or a coach to give you feedback and suggestions. You can also record yourself and listen to your tone, pace, and clarity. You should aim for a concise, coherent, and relevant answer that lasts no more than two minutes. Avoid rambling, repeating, or sounding too rehearsed. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions or provide more details if asked.

Highlight how your skills and experiences align with the company's mission and goals. Share a brief anecdote about a project you worked on that relates to their industry or values. Show enthusiasm for the company by mentioning specific aspects that excite you, like their commitment to sustainability or innovative technology. Demonstrate your knowledge of the industry trends and competitors to showcase your understanding of the company's position in the market. Practice your answer with a trusted individual to receive feedback and refine your delivery.
