In my experience with application development primarily in SAP HANA integrated with ecommerce platforms I can say that queries(in SQL, postgre or flexi queries) which are used, leverage the structured and organized data within the warehouse to perform efficient searches and retrieve specific information quickly. Hence to manage the data model its essential we understand ETL(Extract, Transform, Load) process and get well equipped with the concept of data partitioning and indexing.
